Overview

Hermann Albert Bumke GmbH & Co. KG is a German wholesale company headquartered in Hannover. It operates as an electrical, sanitary and heating wholesaler and is regarded as one of Germany's most significant wholesale businesses, supplying industry, skilled trades, specialist retailers and other commercial customers. The company was founded in 1909 by Hermann Albert Bumke from Berlin and Wilhelm Meier from Hannover, initially trading as an electrical wholesaler under the name Bumke & Meier at Runde Straße 3 near what later became Raschplatz. During the German Empire it expanded rapidly, opening branches in Braunschweig, Kassel and Magdeburg, though these were lost during World War I and the hyperinflation of the early Weimar Republic. Around the start of the Great Depression in 1929, Eduard Bergmann took over the firm and in 1931 added a sanitary supplies department. At the beginning of World War II, Bergmann had a large warehouse built at Engelbosteler Damm 5 in Hannover's Nordstadt, in addition to existing buildings in the Mitte district. During the subsequent air raids on Hannover, the warehouse and all other company buildings were destroyed. In the post-war period, Bergmann rebuilt only at Engelbosteler Damm, completing a new company building in 1955. With the reopening of the business premises, Bergmann's daughter Inge Bergmann gradually took on leadership roles, and after her father's death in 1973 she ran the company alone. Under their leadership the company's grounds were expanded to 9,000 square metres. In 2002 Inge Bergmann sold the company to the Zander Gruppe but remained owner of the properties in the Nordstadt used by the firm. A lease dating from the 1970s was intended to secure the wholesale site until 2026, but after her death in 2017 the location question changed. In 2020 Bumke moved into a newly built main building at Gertrud-Knebusch-Straße and opened the Lumina bathroom exhibition there. Today, as part of the Zander Gruppe, Bumke operates within a network of over 100 locations with around 2,000 colleagues, offering products and services around sanitary, heating, building installation, lighting technology, renewable energies, household appliances, industrial supplies, tools and IoT solutions.

History

The company was founded in 1909 by Hermann Albert Bumke from Berlin and Wilhelm Meier from Hannover, initially operating as an electrical wholesaler under the name Bumke & Meier at Runde Straße 3 near what later became Raschplatz. Still during the German Empire, the company expanded rapidly, opening branches in Braunschweig, Kassel and Magdeburg. However, these branches fell victim to the circumstances of World War I and the German hyperinflation at the beginning of the Weimar Republic. Around the start of the Great Depression in 1929, Eduard Bergmann took over the firm, which he expanded in 1931 with a department for sanitary supplies. Around 1934, the Leipzig publisher Hesse & Becker, department Trenklerdruck, supplied the commemorative publication for the 25th anniversary of the Hermann Albert Bumke Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft m.b.H. as well as 'all required photographic recordings' for it. At the beginning of World War II, Bergmann had a large warehouse building erected at Engelbosteler Damm 5 in the Nordstadt, in addition to the buildings in the Mitte district. During the air raids on Hannover that soon followed, the warehouse and all other company buildings were destroyed. In the post-war period, Eduard Bergmann began rebuilding only at Engelbosteler Damm, completing a new company building in 1955. With the reopening of the business premises, Bergmann's daughter Inge Bergmann gradually took on leadership tasks until, after her father's death in 1973, she continued the company alone. Under the two personalities, the company's grounds were last expanded to 9,000 square metres. In 2002 Inge Bergmann sold the company to the Zander Gruppe but remained owner of the properties in the Nordstadt used by the firm. A lease existing since the 1970s was intended to secure the wholesale location on site until 2026. However, already in 2017, after the death of the 89-year-old, who until the end lived on the top floor of the company building at Engelbosteler Damm and could observe deliveries in the backyards from her roof terrace, the location question changed. While various non-profit organizations entered the inheritance, the estate administration offered the entire company site near the Christuskirche for sale. In 2020 Bumke moved into the newly erected main building at Gertrud-Knebusch-Straße and opened the Lumina bathroom exhibition there. The company site at the southernmost corner of Engelbosteler Damm, known by locals as 'bei Bumke', comprised around 9,000 square metres including adjacent residential buildings between 'E-Damm' and Oberstraße near the Christuskirche. Behind the large facade of the 1955 company building at Engelbosteler Damm 5-9, over which the company name shone in blue letters at night, were several older buildings as red clinker structures. The up to four-storey warehouse buildings, built in the style of late 19th-century industrial architecture, were originally used by Mannesmannröhren-Lager GmbH Hannover. At the end of 2021, the buildings at Engelbosteler Damm 5 and 9 and Oberstraße 4 and 7 as well as the entire rear development were demolished. Today, as part of the Zander Gruppe, Bumke operates within a network of over 100 locations with around 2,000 colleagues, offering everything around sanitary, heating, building installation, lighting technology, renewable energies, household appliances, industrial supplies, tools and IoT solutions.
