Overview

Hero MotoCorp Limited is an Indian multinational manufacturer of motorcycles and scooters headquartered in New Delhi. The company originated in 1984 as Hero Honda Motors, a joint venture between India's Hero Group, associated with the Munjal family, and Japan's Honda Motor Company. Its early growth was built on relatively affordable, fuel-efficient motorcycles designed for the Indian mass market, helping motorcycling become an important form of everyday transportation across urban and rural India. During the 1980s and 1990s, Hero Honda expanded through products that emphasized reliability, low operating costs, simple maintenance and fuel economy. Its advertising slogan, “Fill it – Shut it – Forget it,” became closely associated with the company's practical positioning. The company became India's largest two-wheeler manufacturer in 2001, while the Splendor family developed into one of the country's best-known motorcycle lines. The partnership with Honda ended through a phased separation agreed in 2010. Honda exited its stake in the joint venture, allowing the Indian business to operate independently and to pursue international exports that had previously been restricted under the joint-venture arrangement. Hero Honda Motors was renamed Hero MotoCorp Limited on 29 July 2011, and the new identity and logo were unveiled in London on 9 August 2011. The separation also gave Hero greater freedom in supplier selection, product development and overseas expansion, although it required the company to build capabilities beyond its long-standing Honda relationship. Hero MotoCorp's principal business remains the design, manufacture, distribution and servicing of motorcycles and scooters. Its portfolio includes commuter motorcycles such as Splendor, HF, Passion and Super Splendor; premium and performance-oriented motorcycles such as Xtreme, XPulse and Karizma; and scooters including Destini, Xoom and Pleasure. The company has also entered electric mobility through the VIDA brand, which is operated as a subsidiary. In addition to vehicle sales, Hero has a substantial parts, maintenance and dealer ecosystem, with a large network of dealerships and service points in India. The company operates manufacturing facilities in India, including sites associated with Dharuhera, Gurugram, Neemrana, Haridwar and Halol, and has invested in further manufacturing capacity. It also maintains research and development operations in India and Germany. International growth became more significant after the Honda separation, with Hero targeting markets in Latin America, Africa and West Asia. A manufacturing joint venture in Bangladesh began production in 2017. Hero MotoCorp has pursued investments and partnerships in adjacent mobility and motorcycle technology. It acquired a stake in Erik Buell Racing after that company's bankruptcy proceedings and invested in Ather Energy, an electric-scooter manufacturer. These moves reflected an effort to gain exposure to premium motorcycles, performance engineering and electrification while retaining its core mass-market business. The brand is strongly associated with accessible personal mobility in India. Its scale, extensive service network and commuter-focused products have supported a leading position in the Indian two-wheeler market. At the same time, the company faces competition from manufacturers including Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor Company, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, Royal Enfield and newer electric-mobility businesses. Hero's current strategic challenge is to preserve its cost and distribution advantages while broadening its premium, international and electric offerings.

History

Hero MotoCorp began in 1984 as Hero Honda Motors Limited, a joint venture formed by India's Hero Group and Honda Motor Company of Japan. The venture was established at Dharuhera, India, with both principal partners initially holding substantial stakes. Hero was linked to the Munjal family's Hero Cycles business, while Honda contributed motorcycle technology and manufacturing expertise. The company's early strategy focused on bringing low-cost, dependable motorcycles to India. During the 1980s, increasing demand for personal transportation and the appeal of economical four-stroke motorcycles created favorable conditions for growth. Hero Honda's products were marketed around fuel efficiency, durability and ease of ownership. The company's “Fill it – Shut it – Forget it” campaign captured this proposition and helped establish a strong mass-market identity. By 2001, Hero Honda had become India's largest two-wheeler manufacturer. The Splendor family was central to this achievement, particularly among commuters seeking inexpensive transport and broad access to service and spare parts. The business subsequently developed additional motorcycle ranges and expanded its production and distribution infrastructure. The relationship between Hero and Honda became more difficult in the years before 2010. Reported points of tension included technology-sharing arrangements, royalty payments, the use of Honda-approved suppliers and the organization of spare-parts operations after Honda established its wholly owned Indian subsidiary, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India. In December 2010, the joint-venture partners decided to proceed with a phased separation. Honda sold its stake through transactions involving the Munjal family and related investment arrangements, ending the original partnership. The company was renamed Hero MotoCorp Limited on 29 July 2011. A new logo and identity, developed by Wolff Olins, were unveiled in London on 9 August 2011. Independence allowed Hero MotoCorp to pursue exports more broadly, select suppliers with greater flexibility and develop its own international and product strategy. The company began looking beyond its historic South Asian base toward Latin America, Africa and West Asia. In 2014, Hero announced a manufacturing joint venture with Bangladesh's Nitol-Niloy Group. The Bangladesh operation, HMCL Niloy Bangladesh Limited, began production in 2017. Hero also expanded its technical and industrial footprint through manufacturing sites in India and research and development facilities in Jaipur and Germany. Its operations developed into a large ecosystem involving factories, component suppliers, dealerships and service locations. The post-Honda period also brought diversification. In 2016, Hero MotoCorp acquired a 49.2% interest in Erik Buell Racing and acquired certain assets after the American company entered bankruptcy. The company also invested in Ather Energy, an Indian electric-scooter start-up, in 2016 and again in 2018. These investments provided exposure to electric propulsion and higher-performance engineering, areas outside Hero's traditional commuter core. Hero continued to widen its own portfolio. The XPulse 200 and XPulse 200T, launched in 2019, represented a stronger push into adventure and touring motorcycles. In 2021, cumulative production passed 100 million two-wheelers, a milestone reflecting the scale of the company's Indian business. Hero also introduced online retail and showroom initiatives and developed the VIDA electric-mobility brand, including VIDA electric scooters. The company remains a major Indian two-wheeler manufacturer with a broad domestic distribution and servicing network. Its central competitive strengths are manufacturing scale, brand recognition, product affordability and reach in commuter segments. Its continuing strategic priorities include premium motorcycles, international markets, connected products and electrification. It operates in a competitive sector that includes established Indian, Japanese and European-linked manufacturers as well as electric-vehicle specialists.
