The HGON is a voluntary association. Its mission is the preservation of species diversity in Hesse. It has laid the technical foundation for the majority of Hesse's nature conservation areas and has secured over 300 hectares of unique natural landscapes in its ownership. The return of many species once vanished from Hesse, such as the peregrine falcon, beaver, white stork, and black stork, is attributed to its efforts. It also works on projects such as ADEBAR 2, an atlas of German breeding birds.
