Overview

Hiber for Electronic Media (Arabic: حبر, commonly known online as 7iber) is a Jordanian independent media organisation and digital magazine headquartered in Amman. It began in 2007 as a volunteer-run citizen-media platform and was registered in 2009 as a limited liability company under the name "Hiber for Training and Technology." In 2012 it transformed into a professional journalistic institution with a full-time team of editors, reporters and multimedia producers, and since 2020 it has operated under the company "Hiber for Electronic Media" (حبر للإعلام الإلكتروني). The outlet publishes in-depth, multimedia journalism, critical analysis and public interviews on political, economic, social, cultural and intellectual issues. Its editorial mission centres on freedom of expression, the right to access information, and the role of journalism in holding power and dominant discourse to account, with stated commitments to equality, justice, freedom, pluralism and human rights. Hiber's revenue model is mixed: it relies on grants and funded projects, supplemented by income from media consulting, media services and training. Its institutional supporters have included the Open Society Foundations, the International Media Support (IMS), the European Endowment for Democracy (EED), the French media development agency CFI, Free Press Unlimited and Porticus, alongside project support from the Canadian and Swiss embassies in Amman. As a digital-native Arabic-language publication, Hiber covers Jordanian and regional affairs with long-form reporting, data and visual storytelling, and commentary. It is a private-sector organisation in Jordan and remains an active independent media brand.

History

Hiber (حبر) launched in 2007 in Jordan as a volunteer-run citizen-media platform, with initial website costs covered by its founders. In 2009 it was registered in Jordan as a limited liability company under the name "Hiber for Training and Technology" and began implementing small funded projects in media training. A turning point came in 2012, when an institutional support grant from the Open Society Foundations helped Hiber transform into a professional journalistic institution with a full-time team of editors, journalists and multimedia producers. Since then it has relied on grants and projects for income, supplemented by consulting, media services and training. Since 2020 it has operated under the limited liability company "Hiber for Electronic Media." In 2025 it received institutional support from the International Media Support (IMS), the European Endowment for Democracy (EED), the Open Society Foundations (OSF), the French media development agency CFI, Free Press Unlimited and Porticus, as well as project support from the Canadian and Swiss embassies in Amman.
