Overview

Hideji Beer is a craft beer brand based in Miyazaki, Kyushu, Japan. According to its official site, it brews at the foot of Mt. Mukabaki in northern Miyazaki, using high-quality natural water and fresh house-cultivated yeast, and describes its aim as becoming a "glocal craft beer brewery" guided by the motto "Think Global, Brew Local." The brand was founded in 1996 by the late Eiji Nishida, whose nickname "Hideji" gave the beer its name. After a period as a division of a parent company and a near-withdrawal from the business, the current company Miyazaki Hideji Beer Co., Ltd. was established in July 2010 through an employee buy-out, and it describes itself as the only dedicated craft beer maker in the prefecture.

History

Hideji Beer was founded in 1996, when deregulation lifted the ban on local beer (jibiru) and local beers were appearing across Japan. It was launched by the late Eiji Nishida, already elderly at the time, who was also called "Hideji-san"; the beer took its name from him. A brewery and brewery restaurant were established on land cleared at the foot of Mt. Mukabaki, deep in the Nobeoka area. The company was set up in 1996 as one division of a Nobeoka small-to-medium enterprise involved in petroleum sales. After the first local beer boom faded, the business struggled, and by the mid-2000s discussions about withdrawing from the business arose internally. In 2006 the company began cultivating its own yeast, which it describes as its "last gamble" and a turning point toward continuing the business. After the death of founder Nishida and later of then-president Hidetoshi Nishida, the operating company notified the beer division of its abolition. The then head of the beer division, Nagano, decided to run the beer business independently through an employee buy-out (EBO). In July 2010, Miyazaki Hideji Beer Co., Ltd. was established, and in November 2010 it acquired the beer manufacturing and sales division from Nishida Co., Ltd. via EBO, restarting as the only dedicated local beer maker in the prefecture. Since then it has expanded sales channels from mainly within the prefecture to outside it, and has commercialized beers and happoshu using Miyazaki prefectural ingredients under the "Miyazaki Agricultural Support Project" name. Its YAHAZU Pilsner is made from 100% Miyazaki-grown beer barley, freshly house-made malt, and freshly milled small-batch brewing.
