History
Higher Education Press was established in 1954 as a specialised publishing house for higher-education teaching materials in the People's Republic of China. From its early years it was attached to the national education administration and later to the Ministry of Education, giving it a central role in producing standardised textbooks for universities and colleges. Over the following decades HEP expanded its catalogue from basic science and engineering textbooks into humanities, social sciences, medicine, agriculture, foreign languages and vocational education. It became one of the largest and most influential educational publishers in China, and its titles are widely adopted in national curricula. In the reform era after the late 1970s, HEP modernised its editorial and distribution operations and developed cooperative relationships with international publishers for translated and co-published works. In the 2000s and 2010s the press invested heavily in digital publishing, building the hep.com.cn portal and a range of online learning and resource platforms to complement print textbooks. As a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Education, HEP continues to play a policy-relevant role in curriculum development, textbook approval and the supply of teaching materials to Chinese higher-education institutions.
