Overview

HIM GmbH (formerly Hessische Industriemüll GmbH) is a German circular economy and hazardous waste management company headquartered in Biebesheim am Rhein, Hesse. Founded in 1975 as Hessische Industriemüll GmbH, it was originally responsible for the disposal of all hazardous waste generated in Hesse under the state's delivery obligation (Andienungspflicht). The company operates specialized facilities for the treatment, recycling, and disposal of hazardous waste, including a hazardous waste incineration plant in Biebesheim, as well as sites in Kassel, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, and Billigheim. Since 1989, HIM has also been active in the remediation of contaminated sites on behalf of the state of Hesse. In 2000, following the acquisition of Sonderabfallentsorgung Baden-Württemberg GmbH (SBW), the company was renamed HIM GmbH. Ownership changed over the years: until 2006, the state of Hesse and 13 other shareholders held stakes; in 2006, these shares were sold to the Hamburg financial investor Arcadia, which merged HIM with AVG Abfall-Verwertungs-Gesellschaft mbH under a holding company. In 2008, the SAV-Beteiligungs GmbH, which owned HIM, was sold to the Belgian Indaver Group (51%) and the Dutch NIBC European Infrastructure Fund (49%). Today, HIM GmbH operates as part of Indaver Deutschland, providing waste management services including hazardous waste incineration, chemical-physical treatment, oil/water separation, emulsion separation, and landfill operations. The company is a key player in the German hazardous waste market, serving industry and public authorities.

History

HIM GmbH was founded in 1975 as Hessische Industriemüll GmbH, with the purpose of managing hazardous waste in the German state of Hesse. Under the state's delivery obligation (Andienungspflicht), it became responsible for the disposal of all hazardous waste generated in Hesse, including waste from industrial production. In 1982, the company built a hazardous waste incineration plant in Biebesheim. On 6 May 1986, an explosion occurred at the plant due to a highly flammable gas-air mixture, causing damage of at least one million Deutsche Mark and forcing a shutdown for several weeks. From 1994 to 1997, HIM modernized the Biebesheim plant, achieving an incineration capacity of around 130,000 tonnes per year. The company also operates facilities for the disposal and recycling of hazardous waste in Kassel, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, and Billigheim near Heilbronn. Since 1989, HIM has been active in the remediation of contaminated sites on behalf of the state of Hesse. In 2000, following the acquisition of Sonderabfallentsorgung Baden-Württemberg GmbH (SBW) with facilities in Stuttgart and Billigheim, the company was renamed HIM GmbH. Until 2006, the owners of HIM were the state of Hesse (28.05% or €8,308,493.07) and 13 other shareholders, including E.ON Kraftwerke Beteiligungs-GmbH (35.22%), EAM Energie AG (5.96%), and Infraserv Verwaltungs-GmbH (16.31%). In 2006, the state of Hesse and other shareholders sold their shares to the Hamburg financial investor Arcadia, which merged HIM with AVG Abfall-Verwertungs-Gesellschaft mbH (Hamburg) under a holding company. AVG operates a hazardous waste incineration plant in Hamburg-Tiefstack with an annual capacity of around 100,000 tonnes. In 2007, the company generated revenue of nearly €100 million with approximately 352 employees. On 1 August 2008, SAV-Beteiligungs GmbH, to which HIM GmbH belonged, was sold to the Belgian Indaver Group (51%) and the Dutch NIBC European Infrastructure Fund (49%). The purchase price was not disclosed. Today, HIM GmbH is part of Indaver Deutschland, which operates a network of specialized facilities in Germany, including two hazardous waste incineration plants, four chemical-physical treatment plants, an oil/water separation plant, an emulsion separation plant, an integrated pre-treatment facility, two transfer stations, and a hazardous waste landfill. The German locations include Hamburg, Biebesheim, Kassel, Frankfurt, Billigheim, and Stuttgart.
