Overview

The Hippodrome is a London entertainment and casino venue. Its official website states it is the UK's largest and most popular entertainment and casino venue, open 24/7 with free entry and no membership required, and describes it as an established cornerstone of West End life. The venue offers seven floors, three casinos, London's largest dedicated poker floor, a multi-award-winning steak house, the Chop Chop Chinese restaurant, Magic Mike Live, and nine bars. It also offers an online casino allowing remote play on its actual tables. The venue opened in 1900 as a circus theatre and has a long history as a London theatre and entertainment landmark; it became the Hippodrome Casino in 2012.

History

The Hippodrome opened in 1900 as a circus theatre with a 100,000 gallon pool, featuring elephants, polar bears and carriages pulled by racing teams of horses. Works in 1909 enlarged the stage and advanced the proscenium to suit the theatre for variety and, from 1912, revue-style performances. Harry Houdini performed there and the venue staged the country's first ever performance of Swan Lake. In the 1950s the Hippodrome was transformed into the legendary Talk of the Town, and featured a host of major stars including the now world-famous residency of Judy Garland. The venue later became the Hippodrome Casino in 2012. A book titled 'The Hippodrome: an entertainment of unexampled brilliance' covers the venue's history, with chapters including The Circus of Variety (1900–1909), Ragtime & Revue (1909–1919), The Comedy Musical (1920–1939), From Blackout to Rock 'n' Roll (1939–1958), The Talk of the Town (1958–1982), The Greatest Disco in the World (the Peter Stringfellow years followed by La Clique), and The Hippodrome Casino (2012–present day).
