Overview
The Hit or Miss is a traditional country pub in the Chiltern village of Penn Street, between Amersham and Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, England. Its building is thought to date back to the 18th century, with earliest deeds from 1730, and it is known to have opened as a pub on 1 June 1798. The pub's unusual name comes from a cricketing term, inspired by its own cricket team, which still plays opposite the pub on Sunday afternoons in summer. The pub serves classic British pub food, including a well-known burger night, and hosts functions and events. It is a community landmark in an area popular for woodland walks and nature trails.
History
The building that is now The Hit or Miss was originally owned by the furniture makers Dancer and Hearne. Its earliest deeds date back to 1730, and it is known that it opened as a pub on 1st June 1798. In the 1860s, William Hearne, a labourer, and his wife Eliza, a lacemaker, established The Hit or Miss pub, amalgamating a series of cottages. Legend has it that there was a one-man workshop shed behind the pub where chairs or parts of chairs were made. The pub's unusual name is born from a cricketing term, inspired by the pub's own cricketing team who still play just opposite the pub, on Sunday afternoons in the summer. The pub has a long association with local sports, with a soccer team active in 1910–1912 and a cricket team in the early 1900s. Today it remains a traditional Buckinghamshire country pub in the Chiltern village of Penn Street, between Amersham and Beaconsfield, serving food and hosting functions and events.
