Overview

Hitachi Consulting Corporation was an American international management and technology consulting firm headquartered in Dallas, Texas. It was established in November 2000 after Hitachi acquired the Chicago-based information technology and strategy consulting practice of Grant Thornton LLP. The acquisition gave Hitachi an established consulting platform in the United States and formed the basis for a broader professional-services business supporting business strategy, technology implementation, enterprise applications, information management, and operational transformation. The company initially operated as Experio Solutions. In 2003, it reached an agreement allowing it to use the Hitachi name, and the business subsequently developed as Hitachi Consulting. A related Japanese Hitachi-owned consulting business, Exsurge, was renamed Hitachi Consulting Co., Ltd. in April 2006. The firm's founding leadership included former Grant Thornton principals Chuck Scoville, Mike Driessen, and Dan Raskas, along with 18 other former Grant Thornton partners and principals. After the collapse of Arthur Andersen, 23 partners and approximately 370 consultants from Arthur Andersen Business Consulting joined Hitachi Consulting in June 2002, strengthening its strategy and implementation capabilities. Growth was driven substantially through acquisitions. During the 2000s, Hitachi Consulting purchased or absorbed WaveBend Solutions, Tactica Technology, Aspirity, Dove Consulting, Navigator Systems, Impact Plus, Iteration2, and JMN Associates. These transactions expanded its capabilities in technology consulting, implementation, and sector-specific advisory work. The company also established a Global Solutions Center in India in November 2005 and formed Hitachi Consulting Europe in 2006 through subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Portugal. Its European delivery capacity was further expanded by the acquisition of Edenbrook in 2009, a United Kingdom-based Microsoft and Oracle implementation partner. The company continued international expansion in the 2010s. Its acquisition of Sierra Atlantic in 2011 added approximately 2,500 employees and strengthened offshore enterprise-application services and outsourced product development, with major delivery centers in Hyderabad and Guangzhou. Prizim, acquired in 2012, added environmental sustainability, energy, and social-responsibility consulting. The purchase of Celerant Consulting at the end of 2012 broadened Hitachi's management-consulting and operational-improvement capabilities. Further acquisitions included the United Kingdom information-management and business-intelligence specialist IMGroup in 2014 and Singapore-based Stone Apple Solutions, together with subsidiaries including Global CyberSoft and F2C Consultoria, later that year. The latter transaction expanded the business's presence across Southeast Asia and added operations connected with Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia. Hitachi Consulting served clients through a combination of advisory work, systems implementation, technology delivery, and managed or outsourced services. Its portfolio was closely related to Hitachi's wider information and telecommunications and Social Innovation strategies, linking consulting with industrial, infrastructure, enterprise, and digital-transformation initiatives. The firm employed approximately 6,500 people across its international operations at the height of its standalone existence. In September 2019, Hitachi announced plans to integrate Hitachi Consulting with Hitachi Vantara in order to accelerate international growth of Hitachi's Social Innovation Business and digital activities. From January 2020, the combined operations used the Hitachi Vantara brand and were led by Toshiaki Tokunaga. Hitachi Consulting therefore ceased operating as a distinct standalone brand, although many of its consulting, implementation, and digital capabilities continued within the integrated Hitachi Van…

History

Hitachi Consulting began in November 2000 when Hitachi acquired the Chicago information-technology and strategy-consulting practice of Grant Thornton LLP. The new business was initially called Experio Solutions. Its early leadership came from former Grant Thornton principals, including Chuck Scoville, Mike Driessen, and Dan Raskas, supported by 18 former partners and principals. In June 2002, 23 partners and about 370 consultants from Arthur Andersen Business Consulting joined after Arthur Andersen's dissolution, adding significant consulting capacity. The company pursued an acquisition-led expansion strategy. It acquired WaveBend Solutions from BDO Seidman in June 2001, Tactica Technology in November 2001, Aspirity in April 2004, Dove Consulting in August 2005, Navigator Systems in February 2006, Impact Plus through Hitachi Consulting UK in April 2007, Iteration2 in June 2007, and JMN Associates in March 2008. In 2003, the company obtained permission to use the Hitachi name, marking its transition from Experio Solutions to Hitachi Consulting. In April 2006, Hitachi-owned Japanese consulting company Exsurge was renamed Hitachi Consulting Co., Ltd. International infrastructure developed alongside the acquisitions. Hitachi opened a Global Solutions Center in India in November 2005 to provide information-technology and project-management support. Hitachi Consulting Europe was established in March 2006 through subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Portugal. In March 2009, the acquisition of Edenbrook doubled the firm's United Kingdom consulting and implementation capacity, particularly in Microsoft and Oracle services. The company's scale increased sharply in the following decade. Sierra Atlantic was acquired in January 2011, adding approximately 2,500 employees and delivery centers in Hyderabad and Guangzhou. Prizim joined in April 2012 and became the Environmental Sustainability Solutions practice. Celerant Consulting was acquired at the end of 2012 and integrated into the Information and Telecommunications Systems business unit. In May 2014, Hitachi Consulting acquired IMGroup, while an October 2014 transaction for Stone Apple Solutions and associated subsidiaries expanded its presence across Southeast Asia and added Global CyberSoft in Vietnam and F2C Consultoria in Brazil. At its peak as a standalone business, Hitachi Consulting employed approximately 6,500 people in a network spanning the United States, Japan, Brazil, China, India, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Vietnam. Its work combined management advisory, enterprise applications, information management, business intelligence, digital transformation, sustainability, and technology delivery. In September 2019, Hitachi announced that it would integrate Hitachi Consulting with Hitachi Vantara. The stated objective was to accelerate global expansion of Hitachi's Social Innovation Business and digital growth. From January 2020, the integrated operations used the Hitachi Vantara brand and were led by Toshiaki Tokunaga. Hitachi Consulting consequently ceased to operate as a separate standalone brand.
