Overview

HKL Research, Inc. is a privately held company founded in 1995 by Dr. Zbyszek Otwinowski and Dr. Wladek Minor, located in Charlottesville, Virginia. The company was established primarily to simplify the distribution of the HKL-2000 and HKL program suites, and to offer support and assistance to the user community. Its flagship software, HKL-2000, is widely used in structural biology for processing X-ray diffraction data. According to the company, HKL-2000 has been used by over 100 pharmaceutical companies and over 1200 academic, governmental, and non-profit institutions, and is available at many synchrotron beam lines. The paper describing the software has over 30,000 citations and is ranked 23rd among the top 100 most frequently cited scientific papers of all time. It has been reported to be used in the structure determination process in over 50% of all X-ray crystallography structures deposited to the Protein Data Bank (PDB). The HKL-3000 software combines all functions of HKL-2000 with other macromolecular crystallographic programs, including CCP4, ARP/wARP, SHELX-97, SOLVE/RESOLVE, Coot, PyMOL, and Buccaneer. Over 550 published papers have reported the use of HKL-3000. HKL Research provides distribution and support for both packages, as well as a data processing service. The company holds registered trademarks for Denzo®, HKL®, and HKL-2000®. HKL Research has funded an award for the most innovative M.Sc. thesis at the Physics Department of the University of Warsaw every year since 1997.

History

HKL Research, Inc. was founded in 1995 by Dr. Zbyszek Otwinowski and Dr. Wladek Minor in Charlottesville, Virginia. The company was established primarily to simplify the distribution of the HKL-2000 and HKL program suites, and to offer support and assistance to the user community as the programs grew in popularity. The origins of the software date back to the 1980s: the first versions of Denzo and Scalepack, two of the three main components of the HKL program suite, were written by Dr. Otwinowski at the University of Chicago between 1983 and 1988, and then at Yale University until 1994. Dr. Wladek Minor wrote the initial version of the XDisplayF program—the third main component—while at Purdue University between 1988 and 1995. Since 1996, the display program, renamed xdisp, has been further developed at the University of Virginia. Over time, many utility programs were added and the HKL package evolved into a more advanced and extended version, the HKL-2000 program. Subsequently, HKL-2000 was redesigned to interact with several other macromolecular crystallographic computer programs to add structure determination capabilities; the new package was named HKL-3000. HKL-3000 combines all functions of HKL-2000 with the CCP4 suite, the ARP/wARP suite, the SHELX-97 suite, the SOLVE/RESOLVE suite, Coot, PyMOL, and Buccaneer. The company reports that HKL-2000 has been used by over 100 pharmaceutical companies and over 1200 academic, governmental, and non-profit institutions, and is available at many synchrotron beam lines. The company holds registered trademarks for Denzo®, HKL®, and HKL-2000®.
