Overview
Hofbräu Kaltenhausen presents itself as a meeting point of beer culture, combining a Spezialitäten-Manufaktur (specialty manufactory) and a traditional Bräustübl. Its own history page states that the history of Salzburg's oldest brewery begins with the foundation stone laid by Salzburg merchant Hans Elsenheimer in 1475, and that in 1498 the brewery passed into the possession of the Salzburg archbishops and became Hofbräu Kaltenhausen.
History
According to the brewery's own history page, the history of Salzburg's oldest brewery begins with the foundation stone laid by Salzburg merchant Hans Elsenheimer. He made use of the geological peculiarities at Kaltenhausen, where cool air flowing from the wind pipes of the Barmsteine gave the place its name; there, where clear rock spring water from the Barmsteine favored brewing and underground cold rooms favored storage, he built the so-called "Kalte Bräuhaus" in 1475. In 1498 the brewery passed into the possession of the Salzburg archbishops and became Hofbräu Kaltenhausen. The page adds that much has changed over the long history of Hofbräu Kaltenhausen, but one constant has remained: the idea of preserving traditions while remaining open to new things.
