Overview

Hofbrauerei Lohmen is a small, owner-operated organic craft brewery based in Lohmen in the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany. Founded by Stefan Oettel, who began brewing again in 2014 and established the professional brewery on his family's former farm in 2017, the brewery has operated under the Hofbrauerei Lohmen name since 2018. It brews with malt and hops from certified organic agriculture, and its brewing process is certified according to organic processing guidelines by the DE-ÖKO-039 inspection body. The brewery uses a 750-litre three-vessel brewhouse with an open fermentation vessel and five closed storage tanks, filling its beer into casks and bottles. Its product range includes various beer styles, and it also continues a family tradition of delivering apple juice from unsprayed orchards in the Saxon Switzerland area. The brewery is located on a historic farmstead dating from 1830, and the site has a much older brewing tradition: a brewery in the Kammergut Lohmen was first mentioned in 1581, and a brewhouse and malt kiln were rebuilt in 1764. The modern Hofbrauerei Lohmen sees itself as continuing this local brewing heritage while focusing on organic ingredients and artisanal methods. The brewery is not publicly listed and remains privately owned by its founder.

History

The Hofbrauerei Lohmen is a modern organic craft brewery that continues a long brewing tradition in Lohmen, Saxony. The site's brewing history dates back to 1581, when a brewery in the Kammergut Lohmen was first mentioned. In 1764, a brewhouse and malt kiln were rebuilt, and in 1804 part of the malt house collapsed toward the Schwarzen Berg and was rebuilt by 1805. In 1872, H. Büttner founded the Brauerei & Mälzerei H. Büttner. In 1888, brewmaster Otto Hoyer took over the brewery and renamed it Brauerei Lohmen. In 1935, Hans Hoyer took over the brewery. By 1939, the brewery produced top-fermented beers and lemonades, had its own brewhouse and malthouse, and employed three workers and employees producing 1,400 hectoliters annually. In 1939, Hoyer had to stop brewing due to the war. In 1947, brewing operations resumed. In 1960, the brewery was integrated into the PGH of beverage producers as Basteiquell Lohmen. In 1972, it was nationalized. Until 1974, it produced under the name VEB (K) Basteiquell Lohmen, then as VEB Basteiquell Lohmen. It produced for VEB Basteiquell Lohmen in VEB Margon, in VEB Dresdner Brauereien, and from 1978 as VEB Basteiquell Lohmen in VEB Getränkeversorgung Pirna in VE Getränkekombinat Dresden. In 1985, it became a contract producer for VEB Feldschlösschen Brauerei Dresden in VE Getränkekombinat Dresden, BT Basteiquell Lohmen. Production then consisted only of Lohmener Doppel-Caramel Malzbier. In 1987, the brewery was closed. The modern Hofbrauerei Lohmen was founded by Stefan Oettel, who began brewing again in May 2014 with purchased malt in a 150-liter milk tank, later expanded to 300 liters. The beer was fermented in simple unpressurized tanks in a vaulted cellar. In 2017, he set up a professional brewery on the family's former farm from 1830 and brewed in a 750-liter three-vessel brewhouse with an open fermentation vessel and five closed storage tanks. The beer is filled into casks and bottles. Since 2018, the brewery has operated under the name Hofbrauerei Lohmen. The brewery also continues to deliver apple juice from unsprayed orchards in the Saxon Switzerland area to the greater Dresden area each autumn.
