Overview

Hohenstein Laboratories, also known as the Hohenstein Group and historically associated with the Hohenstein Institute, is a German research and testing organization headquartered at Hohenstein Castle in Bönnigheim, Baden-Württemberg. Founded in 1946 by textile educator and researcher Otto Mecheels, the organization developed from a post-war teaching and research institution into an international network providing laboratory testing, product evaluation, certification, consulting, training, and applied research. The group’s principal expertise is in textiles and textile-related goods. Its work covers material and product quality, textile performance, clothing fit, textile care, hygiene, medical and health-related products, sustainability criteria, harmful-substance testing, and conformity assessment. It also works with hardlines and other consumer goods, including areas added or expanded through its international operations and acquisitions. The organization’s services are intended for manufacturers, brands, retailers, industry, trade, and other commercial customers that require independent evidence about the safety, quality, performance, or sustainability characteristics of products. A major turning point came in the 1960s, when Otto Mecheels’s son Jürgen Mecheels assumed responsibility for the institution and broadened its research and service portfolio. Jürgen was involved in the creation of the International Association for Research and Testing in the Field of Textile Ecology, commonly associated with the OEKO-TEX system. Hohenstein has subsequently been connected with testing and certification work supporting OEKO-TEX labels, including OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, which addresses harmful substances in textiles and textile-related materials. The system helped make laboratory-based textile safety claims more visible to international consumers and supply chains. Since 1995, the business has been led by the third generation of the Mecheels family, Stefan Mecheels. Under this leadership, Hohenstein expanded its overseas laboratory and office network, created the Hohenstein Academy, and established or developed operations in markets including India, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Hungary. The group’s international presence grew to offices and activities in more than 40 countries, while its German base remained the center of its research, testing, training, and administrative operations. Hohenstein’s activities are organized through several specialized entities. Hohenstein Laboratories GmbH & Co. KG provides laboratory, assessment, consulting, and training services, including work involving medical products, disinfectants, textiles, and efficacy or safety questions. Hohenstein Textile Testing Institute GmbH & Co. KG focuses on testing materials, textile products, and related goods. Hohenstein Institut für Textilinnovation gGmbH conducts research in textiles, hygiene, and adjacent fields. A further group structure coordinates affiliated international branches and laboratories. The organization combines commercial testing and certification with publicly supported and industry-cooperative research. Its research addresses practical product applications, textile and apparel concepts, hygiene, fiber-based materials, and performance under real-world conditions. Hohenstein participates in regional research networks such as the Innovation Alliance Baden-Württemberg and the Alliance for Fiber-Based Materials Baden-Württemberg. The group also operates as a training provider through the Hohenstein Academy. In the early 2020s, Hohenstein continued to expand beyond conventional textile testing. At the end of 2022 it invested in Sizekick, a company spun out of the body-measurement and sizing technology business Presize. In 2023 it acquired Hong Kong laboratory company QAT Services Limited, broadening its testing capabilities to food-contact materials, furniture, toys, hardlines, and other consumer goods.

History

Hohenstein Laboratories was established in 1946 by Otto Mecheels after the Second World War. Mecheels had taught in Mönchengladbach and returned with members of his staff to the Hohenstein area. He continued teaching and research in Renaissance-era Hohenstein Castle, which he rented from the French military government. The Mecheels family acquired the castle in 1952, creating the physical and institutional base from which the organization developed. During the 1960s, leadership passed to Otto Mecheels’s son, Jürgen Mecheels. He expanded the institution’s services and research fields and helped shift it from a primarily local teaching and research operation toward a broader technical organization serving textile manufacturers and other industry participants. Jürgen was also a co-founder of the International Association for Research and Testing in the Field of Textile Ecology. Through this area of work, Hohenstein became associated with the OEKO-TEX testing and certification framework, including OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, a label used for textiles tested for specified harmful substances. From 1995, Stefan Mecheels represented the third generation of family leadership. The group developed international laboratories and offices, including operations in India, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Hungary. By the mid-2010s, Hohenstein had built a network of foreign offices in more than 40 countries. Internationalization allowed the organization to support global textile and apparel supply chains while retaining its main research and testing base in Germany. The modern Hohenstein Group combines several types of activity. Its laboratories conduct testing and assessments of textile, apparel, medical, hygiene, disinfectant, and related products. Its certification work translates laboratory findings into certificates, labels, and conformity documentation. Its consulting practice advises companies on product development, performance, safety, sustainability, and market requirements. The Hohenstein Academy provides training, while the research organizations conduct public-sector and industry-cooperative projects. Research has remained closely connected to practical product use. Projects address textile and apparel concepts, hygiene, fiber-based materials, product functionality, and performance under realistic conditions. Hohenstein participates in regional innovation and research networks in Baden-Württemberg, including the Innovation Alliance Baden-Württemberg and the Alliance for Fiber-Based Materials Baden-Württemberg. The group’s scope broadened further in the early 2020s. New facilities and international expansion continued through 2022, when Hohenstein invested in Sizekick, a spin-off of Presize focused on digital sizing and related technology. In 2023, Hohenstein acquired QAT Services Limited in Hong Kong. This transaction added or strengthened capabilities in testing food-contact materials, furniture, toys, hardlines, and other consumer products. Corporate ownership remains with the Mecheels family. A family advisory board was established in 2022. The group operates through Hohenstein Laboratories GmbH & Co. KG, Hohenstein Textile Testing Institute GmbH & Co. KG, Hohenstein Institut für Textilinnovation gGmbH, and affiliated foreign entities coordinated through the wider Hohenstein structure. Its current identity is therefore broader than that of a conventional textile laboratory: it is an international, family-owned technical-services and research group combining laboratory evidence, certification, education, consulting, and innovation.
