Overview

Hokkaido Bio-Industry Corporation (株式会社北海道バイオインダストリー) is a Japanese bio-venture company headquartered in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Founded in September 1997, it describes itself as Hokkaido's first university-originated bio-venture, created from research seeds developed by Professor Nishimura and colleagues at Hokkaido Tokai University (now Tokai University) together with an entrepreneurship project emerging from the 'Issuikai' inter-industry exchange group of the Hokkaido Association of Small and Medium Enterprise Entrepreneurs. The company was initially established as a limited company (yugen kaisha) with capital of 3.1 million yen and reorganized into a joint-stock company (kabushiki kaisha) in January 1999. Its current stated capital is 30.6 million yen. The company's core theme is the high-value addition to Hokkaido food resources. It scientifically verifies the functionality of wild plants and vegetables traditionally regarded in Hokkaido as beneficial to health, and develops and sells functional foods, food ingredients and functional-oriented processed foods aimed at preventing lifestyle-related diseases. Its signature proprietary technology is the BRC (Bio-Rational Control) method, which activates functional components of Allium plants such as onions and garlic-family plants. This technology underpins products including BRC onion paste, onion-based dressings and supplements. Hokkaido Bio-Industry operates across several business lines: functional foods and supplements; functional food and general food ingredients; functional-oriented foods; manufacturing market development and sales agency support; and repacking services. Its product range has included yamabiru (Allium victorialis) egg-yolk oil 'Kurotama', yamabiru power 'Genkigen', the health deodorant 'Hirehari Sokkai', 'Hokkaido Yacon Tea', 'BRC Onion Paste', 'DHA-blended Vinegared Onion', 'Tamanei SARARA', the nutritional functional food 'Allium Excela', conditioning sweets 'HA-RU', 'Balance Rim', 'Premia Kirei Cha' blended tea, and sports conditioning supplements under the 'Ganbare Watashi!' series. More recent consumer products include Premium Hokkaido Onion Dressing, Oligonol, Bionaturel Hokkaido Onion Dressing (Plain), and Hokkaido Button Shrimp Powder. The company positions itself as a research-and-development-oriented regional trading company representing Hokkaido, with expertise in Hokkaido food and health and manufacturing capabilities. It collaborates with health-related industries and agricultural, forestry, commercial and industrial operators to discover new regional resources, utilize unused resources, and address social issues in food such as food loss, actively promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its stated corporate philosophy is to deliver delicious, safe and secure, healthful Hokkaido foods at fair prices to people around the world. The representative director is Toshitaka Murakami. As of the company's disclosure, it has 10 employees including part-time staff, with headquarters in Sapporo's Toyohira ward and a Yubari office.

History

Hokkaido Bio-Industry Corporation was founded in September 1997 as Hokkaido Bio-Industry Yugen Kaisha (limited company), with capital of 3.1 million yen, through joint investment by member companies of the 'Issuikai' inter-industry exchange group of the Hokkaido Association of Small and Medium Enterprise Entrepreneurs. The venture grew out of research seeds from Professor Nishimura and colleagues at Hokkaido Tokai University (now Tokai University), with a joint patent application filed in April 1997 for a comfrey (Symphytum) deodorant. In July 1997 the project was certified under the Hokkaido entrepreneurship promotion incentive program, and Hiroki Sado, then chairman, became representative director. In 1998 the company received a research and development grant from the Sapporo Bank SME New Technology Research Assistance Fund, launched yamabiru (Allium victorialis) egg-yolk oil 'Kurotama' in August, and participated in a NEDO venture company incubation regional consortium program. In January 1999 it reorganized into a joint-stock company, Hokkaido Bio-Industry Kabushiki Kaisha. In October 1999 it opened the Yubari Office's northern functional plant experimental farm in Yubari City, and in December launched yamabiru power 'Genkigen'. In 2000 it opened a yacon experimental farm in Kurisawa and completed the Yubari Food Processing Research Institute; capital was increased to 20.6 million yen in December. In 2001 it launched the health deodorant 'Hirehari Sokkai' and the health diet tablet 'Yacon Slim no Tensai', and in December launched 'Hokkaido Yacon Tea'. In January 2002 the company filed a patent for BRC (Bio-Rational Control) technology for processed Allium plant material, a defining proprietary technology. It launched 'Bio-Do Yamabiru' in October 2002 and 'BRC Onion Paste' in January 2003, followed by 'DHA-blended Vinegared Onion' in October 2003. In 2005 it registered the Allium plant processed material patent (No. 3725079), launched 'Tamanei SARARA' in November, and launched the nutritional functional food 'Allium Excela' in December. In 2006 it won the Hokkaido regional invention award (Japan Patent Office Commissioner's Incentive Award) for Allium Excela and the Allium plant processed material, and established a Scientific Advisory Council. In 2007 it opened a pilot farm in Sapporo's Minami ward, launched the conditioning sweets cheesecake 'HA-RU', and opened the Eniwa Office. In 2008 it registered a patent for a composition with memory impairment improving action (No. 4139677) and launched 'Balance Rim'. In 2009 it was selected among the '300 vibrant manufacturing SMEs', launched 'Premia Kirei Cha' blended tea using eight Hokkaido ingredients, and launched three sports conditioning supplement products in the 'Ganbare Watashi!' series. In 2010 it continued work on intestinal regulation using unused Hokkaido resources. The company has since expanded into functional-oriented processed foods such as dressings and seasonings, and continues to pursue high-value addition of Hokkaido agricultural and marine products, unused resource utilization, and SDG-related initiatives. Its current capital is 30.6 million yen, with headquarters in Sapporo and a Yubari office.
