History

The company was founded in 1960 as Grazer Stadtwerke AG, an Aktiengesellschaft with the business areas 'transport operations', 'electricity', 'gas', 'district heating' and 'water'. For the first time, town gas was produced using its own oil cracking plant. In 1963, district heating supply for Graz began, with the district heating plant in Graz's Puchstraße supplying the first customers with heat. In 1985, the business areas 'funeral services', 'sports and leisure facilities and catering establishments' were incorporated into the company. In the same year, Grazer Stadtwerke AG took over the company 'Ankünder', the Steiermärkische Ankündigungsgesellschaft m.b.H. In 2002, the water services company Styrian Aqua Service GmbH was founded as a subsidiary of Grazer Stadtwerke AG. In anticipation of the upcoming spin-off of the energy areas into Energie Graz GmbH, 'Grazer Stadtwerke Energie Holding' was founded. The spin-off of the electricity, natural gas and district heating areas into Energie Graz GmbH took place on 1 August 2002. Through the spin-off, the ownership structure changed such that since then the City of Graz holds 99.84% and Grazer Bau- und Grünlandsicherungsgesellschaft holds 0.16% of the shares. In 2004, Grazer Stadtwerke AG acquired 100% of Graz Airport. On 29 June 2010, the annual general meeting resolved to convert Graz AG into a Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung (GmbH). Since 30 October 2010, the company has operated under the new name Holding Graz – Kommunale Dienstleistungen GmbH. As of 1 October 2020, Citymanagement was integrated into the Holding. Today, Holding Graz organizes its business fields into Management and Participations, Mobility and Leisure, and Infrastructure and Energy.
