Overview

Hollysys (和利时) is a Chinese industrial automation and digitalization group headquartered in Beijing. Founded in 1993, the company grew out of China's drive to localize high-reliability control systems that had previously been dominated by foreign vendors such as Honeywell, Emerson, and ABB. Its core business is distributed control systems (DCS) for power plants, petrochemical complexes, and other process industries, alongside programmable logic controllers (PLC), safety instrumented systems (SIS), and industrial software. Beyond process automation, Hollysys is a significant supplier of rail transit signaling and train control systems, including automatic train protection (ATP) and computer-based interlocking used in Chinese high-speed and urban metro projects. The group also builds factory automation and discrete-manufacturing solutions, and has expanded into digital-twin and industrial-internet software that models plants, equipment, and processes for simulation, predictive maintenance, and operator training. Hollysys was listed on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the ticker HOLI and was for years one of the better-known Chinese industrial technology names on U.S. exchanges. After a prolonged takeover contest involving multiple bidders, the company was taken private in 2021 by a consortium including Ascendent Capital Partners, ending its NASDAQ listing. It continues to operate as a private group with subsidiaries spanning automation, rail, and digital solutions, and remains a leading domestic alternative to multinational automation vendors in China. Its positioning rests on localized engineering, service density, and compliance with Chinese industrial standards, combined with an installed base in mission-critical infrastructure. The brand is less visible to consumers but is embedded in the control rooms and signaling rooms of power stations, chemical plants, and metro lines.

History

Hollysys was founded in 1993 in Beijing during a period when China's process industries relied heavily on imported control systems. The company's early focus was distributed control systems (DCS) for power generation and petrochemical plants, where reliability and safety requirements are stringent. By developing domestic DCS technology, Hollysys positioned itself as a lower-cost, locally supported alternative to Honeywell, Emerson, Yokogawa, and ABB. Through the 2000s the group broadened into rail transit signaling, supplying automatic train protection and computer-based interlocking systems for Chinese metro and high-speed rail projects. This diversification into transportation infrastructure gave Hollysys a second major revenue pillar alongside process automation. The company also built out PLC, safety instrumented system, and factory automation lines. Hollysys listed on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the ticker HOLI, giving it access to international capital and raising its profile among global industrial investors. It reported a growing installed base across power, chemical, and rail customers, and expanded sales into Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and other emerging markets. In the late 2010s and early 2020s, Hollysys became the subject of a contested privatization. Competing bids emerged from management-affiliated and private-equity groups, reflecting both the company's strategic value and broader trends of Chinese companies delisting from U.S. exchanges. In 2021 a consortium including Ascendent Capital Partners completed a take-private transaction, and Hollysys ceased trading on NASDAQ. Since going private, Hollysys has continued to operate its automation, rail, and digital software businesses. It has invested in industrial internet and digital-twin technologies that model plants and processes for simulation, optimization, and predictive maintenance — an area aligned with China's smart-manufacturing and industrial-upgrade policies. The brand remains a leading domestic automation supplier, competing with both multinationals and other Chinese vendors.
