Overview
Holz-Richter GmbH is a German timber trading company headquartered in Lindlar in the Oberbergischer Kreis, east of Cologne. Founded in May 1959 by Frank Richter as a small wood wholesale business in the heart of Lindlar, it has grown into one of the largest and best-known timber merchants in Germany. The company serves craftsmen, industrial customers and private consumers, and operates in both wholesale and retail. Its national significance stems in part from the online shop casando.de, which it has run since 2004. The business began with a single truck delivering to customers in and around Lindlar, and a first administration office on Luisenstraße. A first own timber warehouse followed on Bahnhofstraße. By the mid-1970s the company had outgrown its premises, and in 1977 it became the first company to move into the newly developed Industriepark Klause between Lindlar and Frielingsdorf. In the early 1990s Dr. Markus Richter took over the family business, which then had about 15 employees, introduced an IT system and drove expansion. Between 1993 and 2000 four additional halls and a large retail exhibition were built. In 2012 a central warehouse of 42,000 m² tripled storage capacity; a new door exhibition opened in 2015 and a new office building followed in 2017. In 2025 storage space in Lindlar was expanded by a further 15,000 m². Today Holz-Richter operates three main business areas: the online business through casando.de with its own marketing department; stationary retail at a specialist centre in Lindlar with around 6,000 m² of exhibition space for flooring, doors and garden products; and wholesale, which accounts for just under 50% of revenue. The product range includes flooring (parquet, vinyl/design floors), interior doors including custom-made doors, timber construction products such as construction solid wood, glued laminated timber and OSB boards, façade cladding, outdoor products such as decking, fences, privacy screens and garden houses, as well as sawn timber. Services include specialist advice, its own logistics with a vehicle fleet and central warehouse, accessories and tools. The company is part of the Holz-Richter Gruppe, which comprises three sister companies: Holz-Richter GmbH, Richter Grundbesitz GmbH & Co. KG and GTT-Global Timber Trade GmbH. All three are part of LADI GmbH, the overarching group holding company based in Lindlar. Managing directors of Holz-Richter GmbH are Markus Richter and Anita Richter. The company employs more than 340 people and operates from a total site area of more than 100,000 m². In 2007 it was named "Parkettfachhändler des Jahres" (Parquet Specialist Retailer of the Year) by Parkett Magazin.
History
Holz-Richter was founded in May 1959 by Frank Richter as a small wood wholesale business in the heart of Lindlar. From his first warehouse at his brother-in-law Otto Schiffarth's quarry, Frank Richter supplied customers with one truck in and around Lindlar. The first administration office was on Luisenstraße. Already in the second year of business a new delivery vehicle was purchased, which was constantly fully loaded due to high demand. A first own timber warehouse was established on Bahnhofstraße. The company grew continuously and by the mid-1970s was bursting at the seams. This made it convenient that the first section of the Industriepark Klause between Lindlar and Frielingsdorf was completed. In 1977 Holz-Richter moved as the first company into the new industrial area, setting an important course for the future. At the beginning of the 1990s Dr. Markus Richter took over the parental business, which then had 15 employees, and initially introduced an IT system. Before that, Markus Richter had completed a business administration degree at the University of Cologne in a very short time and gained six years of international experience as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. He then energetically drove the expansion of Holz-Richter GmbH. Over the years four further halls, a large retail exhibition and its own online marketing department were created. The number of employees grew to more than 340. The core business today, alongside the online business, is still wholesale, which accounts for just under 50% of revenue. In 2004 the online shop casando.de was launched for bulky and heavy construction and finishing products such as flooring, building elements and outdoor products, which developed into one of the leading providers in this segment. In 2012 the infrastructure was expanded with the opening of a central warehouse of 42,000 m², tripling storage capacity. Further expansion steps were the opening of a new door exhibition in 2015 and the construction of a new office building in 2017. In 2025 storage space in Lindlar was expanded by 15,000 m². The company is part of the Holz-Richter Gruppe, which comprises three sister companies: Holz-Richter GmbH, Richter Grundbesitz GmbH & Co. KG and GTT-Global Timber Trade GmbH. All three are part of LADI GmbH, which acts as the overarching group holding company in Lindlar. Managing directors of Holz-Richter GmbH are Markus Richter and Anita Richter. Markus Richter is also managing director of Richter Grundbesitz GmbH & Co. KG and LADI GmbH. The managing director of GTT is Martin Hartkopf. In 2007 Holz-Richter was named "Parkettfachhändler des Jahres" (Parquet Specialist Retailer of the Year) by Parkett Magazin.
