Overview

HomeToGo is a Berlin-based travel technology company whose consumer marketplace helps travelers search, compare, and book vacation rentals across a broad network of professional providers and distribution partners. The company began in 2014 as a metasearch service for holiday homes, responding to the fragmentation of the vacation-rental market: travelers could find accommodation through many specialized portals, but there was no single interface offering broad coverage and comparable search tools. HomeToGo aggregated inventory from multiple sources and presented it through localized websites and applications. The business subsequently developed beyond pure search. In 2017, HomeToGo expanded into marketplace functionality that enabled selected accommodations to be booked directly on its platform. Its consumer proposition combines destination and date search with filters for price, amenities, property type, and other travel requirements. Depending on the market and the supply partner, HomeToGo may earn revenue from booking commissions, direct bookings, or traffic and lead generation. Expansion has been supported by acquisitions. The group added vacation-rental portals and regional brands including Wimdu, Casamundo, tripping.com, Agriturismo.it, CaseVacanza.it, and EscapadaRural. It also acquired the property-management software company Smoobu, the French vacation-rental business associated with Groupe SeLoger, including AMIVAC, and German-speaking-market businesses such as e-domizil and atraveo. In 2022, the acquisition of travel-technology provider SECRA further broadened the group's supply-side technology capabilities. In 2024, HomeToGo acquired a majority stake in KMW Reisen and Super Urlaub, whose brands Kurz Mal Weg and Kurzurlaub focus on themed short-break packages. HomeToGo operates through two broad activities. The Marketplace is the business-to-consumer side, offering search, discovery, and booking services through HomeToGo-branded and regional platforms. HomeToGo_PRO is the business-to-business side, providing software and technology-enabled services for property managers, hosts, and other vacation-rental suppliers. Its capabilities include distribution and channel management, property-management systems, direct-booking tools, websites, guest communication, online check-in, and related operational services. Smoobu is one of the group's constituent technology brands. Artificial intelligence has become a central part of HomeToGo's product strategy. The company introduced AI Mode in 2023 as an AI-assisted travel-planning experience, followed by the Sunny travel assistant and subsequent concepts such as Super AI Sunny. It has also introduced AI-supported search and content functions, including AI Filter, Smart AI Reviews, and Smart AI Offer Summaries. These tools are intended to make a large and fragmented supply base easier to explore while moving the marketplace toward more conversational and personalized trip planning. HomeToGo became a publicly traded company in September 2021 through a business combination with Lakestar SPAC I on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The transaction was reported as valuing the company at approximately €1.2 billion and providing about €250 million in new capital. In 2025, HomeToGo announced an agreement to acquire Interhome from Migros. The proposed transaction would substantially increase the scale of the group's professionally managed accommodation business and reinforce its strategic shift toward HomeToGo_PRO and a more B2B-oriented operating model. HomeToGo describes its reach as spanning roughly 30 countries across Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and the Asia-Pacific region.

History

HomeToGo was established in Berlin in 2014 by Patrick Andrae, Wolfgang Heigl, and Nils Regge. The founders brought experience from online travel and vacation-rental businesses: Heigl had previously founded the flight-search company Swoodoo, while Regge had founded Casamundo. HomeToGo's initial proposition was to aggregate vacation-home listings from a fragmented collection of portals and make them searchable through a single platform. The company initially operated primarily as a metasearch service. Its websites and applications allowed users to compare accommodation from different providers using destinations, dates, prices, amenities, and other criteria. In 2017, HomeToGo developed into a marketplace that could support direct bookings for selected properties, giving the company a more direct relationship with travelers and creating additional commission-based revenue opportunities. A major phase of growth followed in 2018. HomeToGo acquired or added important regional and specialist businesses, including Wimdu, Casamundo, and the United States-based vacation-rental search engine tripping.com. It also expanded through Italian portals Agriturismo.it and CaseVacanza.it and the Spanish rural-accommodation platform EscapadaRural. These transactions increased the group's geographic reach and supplied established brands and inventory in markets where consumer behavior and accommodation supply were locally differentiated. HomeToGo continued to build a supply-side technology business. In 2021, its subsidiary HS Holiday Search GmbH acquired all shares in Smoobu, a Berlin software company serving independent vacation-rental hosts. Smoobu offered channel management, property-management functionality, unified guest communication, online check-in, direct-booking websites, and related tools. It continued operating under its own brand and later became part of the HomeToGo_PRO segment. In September 2021, HomeToGo entered the public markets through a business combination with Lakestar SPAC I and a listing on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Public descriptions of the transaction placed the company's valuation at about €1.2 billion and the new capital raised at about €250 million. The listing supplied a public-company structure for the group's continued acquisition and technology strategy. The acquisition program broadened further in 2022. HomeToGo acquired the vacation-rental business unit of Groupe SeLoger in France, including AMIVAC, a French platform connecting travelers with private and professional property owners. It also acquired e-domizil and atraveo and added SECRA, a travel-technology provider. These deals strengthened both the consumer marketplace and the systems supporting accommodation providers. HomeToGo reorganized its business around two complementary activities. The consumer Marketplace provides discovery, comparison, and booking services, while HomeToGo_PRO supplies software and technology-enabled services to property managers and other vacation-rental businesses. The supply-side division was launched in an earlier form in 2020 and was rebranded HomeToGo_PRO in December 2023. This structure reflects the group's attempt to participate in more parts of the vacation-rental value chain rather than relying only on consumer advertising and booking traffic. Artificial intelligence became an increasingly visible part of the product roadmap. In 2023, HomeToGo launched AI Mode, using generative AI to help create personalized vacation-rental recommendations. In 2024, it introduced AI Sunny and discussed the longer-term development of Super AI Sunny as an AI travel assistant. Later AI functionality included AI Filter, Smart AI Reviews, and Smart AI Offer Summaries, aimed at improving search, review comprehension, and interpretation of accommodation offers. In 2024, HomeToGo acquired a 51% majority stake in KMW Reisen and Super Urlaub, including Kurz Mal Weg and Kurzurlaub, adding thematic short-trip packages to the group's travel offering. In 2025, it announced the planned acquisition of Interhome from Migros. Interhome's professionally managed accommodation portfolio would materially increase HomeToGo's supply-side scale and support the company's stated strategic movement toward a more B2B-oriented group, with HomeToGo_PRO becoming its largest segment. The group operates across approximately 30 countries in Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and the Asia-Pacific region.
