History

Horchata Records emerged from the do-it-yourself activity surrounding The Aquabats and related Southern California bands. Parker Jacobs conceived the name in the early 1990s while working with GOGO13, and the imprint appeared informally on that band's demo materials and promotional posters. In 1994, Christian Jacobs formalized the operation by creating Horchata Records LLC, primarily to release early demos by The Aquabats. The label's initial function was closely connected to independent band development. The Aquabats were building a local audience through unusual costumes, theatrical performances, and a mixture of ska, punk, and novelty-oriented rock. A band-controlled label gave them a way to distribute early recordings before they entered the traditional record-company system. When the group signed with Goldenvoice Records in 1997, Horchata no longer handled the band's main commercial album program. Instead, it was used for mail-order merchandise and remained part of the band's independent identity. In 1999, Parker Jacobs began reworking Horchata as a larger branded label. The proposed imprint was intended to support music connected to The Aquabats' imaginative universe rather than to enforce a single sound. Its prospective roster mixed active side projects, local or affiliated bands, and fictional acts created for the band's mythology. The concept included GOGO13, The Sandfleas, The Moon Monkeys, Digital Unicorn, Planet V, Cactus Jack, The She-Goats, Majestic, The Immortals, NU-TRA, and The Soulutions. Most of these projects did not release records through Horchata, but the roster reflected an effort to turn the label into an extension of the band's world-building and fan culture. The 2000 Rice Capades sampler represented the most visible expression of this expanded idea. It brought together material associated with the label's proposed community of acts, including projects that were not conventional commercial bands. The timing was unfavorable. The Aquabats were dismissed by Goldenvoice in 2000 after the disappointing commercial performance of their third album, and the band subsequently entered a period of reduced activity and financial constraint. The planned expansion of Horchata proved impractical, and the imprint faded from use by 2001. Horchata Records did not develop into a long-running independent company with a large, stable catalog. Its historical significance lies instead in its role as an early self-release platform for The Aquabats, a merchandise channel during the band's major-label period, and an ambitious attempt to create a label organized around theatrical performance, fictional identities, and a shared creative universe.
