History
Horreds Möbelindustri AB was founded in 1936 in Horred, in the Viskan valley, where the first factory was built. The founder was Sven Johansson, born in 1910 in Horred, who grew up around his father's small carpentry workshop. After saving a thousand kronor, he bought a piece of land and built the first factory, a simple board-walled building on a field. Initial production consisted of a bit of everything depending on customer orders: chairs, chests of drawers, cabinets, bathroom and kitchen fittings, made with local timber. Despite wartime and scarce resources, Sven continued building: in 1943 a new stage was erected along the main road, and the following year the first floor of the three-storey building that still characterizes the site was completed. After the war, industrialization accelerated and Horreds began series production. Today the company is run by the third generation through Per-Ola Johansson, and Horreds is counted as one of Sweden's most respected design brands.
