Overview
Hostinec U města Hamburku is a historic pub and former coaching inn located at the corner of Sokolovská and U Nádražní lávky streets in Prague 8-Karlín, Czech Republic. Built between 1828 and 1829 by Václav Novotný, the inn's name is said to derive from the large river port that once operated behind the building, providing a connection along the Vltava and Elbe rivers to Hamburg. The building is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Today, the site operates as Lokál Hamburk, part of the Ambiente restaurant group, serving traditional Czech pub food and beer. The menu features classic dishes such as beef tartare, fried carp, chicken broth, pork tenderloin skewers, braised beef in creamy sauce with cranberry jam and bread dumplings, and roast pork belly with braised cabbage and potato dumplings. The pub operates at Sokolovská 55, Praha 8, and is one of several Ambiente locations listed on the official website, alongside branches in Praha 7, Praha 4, and Brno. The building itself retains its original layout and ceiling structures, with a representative facade featuring a main portal framed by pilasters, a first-floor balcony, and a triangular tympanum. The property was returned to the original owners' family in 1992 restitution and underwent reconstruction after the 2002 flood.
History
Hostinec U města Hamburku is a former coaching inn in Prague 8-Karlín, located at the corner of Sokolovská and U Nádražní lávky streets. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The inn was built between 1828 and 1829 by Václav Novotný. Its name is said to be connected to the construction of a large river port in Pobřežní street behind the building, which provided a connection along the Vltava and Elbe rivers to Hamburg. At the end of the 19th century, part of the building was purchased by JUDr. František Lokay, and it remained in his family until 1948. After being taken over by the state, it was transferred to Tesla Karlín n.p., závod Moskva, which used the courtyard buildings as a motor vehicle facility and part of the building as a dormitory. In 1992, it was returned to the family of the original owners through restitution. After the 2002 flood, it underwent reconstruction. The building consists of a main two-story structure on Sokolovská street and two adjacent one-story wings. The facade on Sokolovská has a representative character. Its main portal is framed by two pilasters, and decorative brackets rise from the pilaster capitals to support a first-floor balcony. The windows on the first floor have window cornices supported by volute brackets. The central risalit is topped by a massive triangular tympanum. Behind a wide passage into a large courtyard was a three-arm staircase supported by four pillars. The courtyard was enclosed by stables and sheds for carriages and carts. The original layout of the interior, including ceiling structures, has been preserved. Today, the site operates as Lokál Hamburk, part of the Ambiente restaurant group, serving traditional Czech pub food and beer.
