Overview
Hotel Kämp is a historic luxury hotel located in Helsinki's Kluuvi district at the junction of Pohjoisesplanadi and Glogatan. It is widely associated with the development of Helsinki's grand-hotel tradition and is described as Finland's first luxury hotel. The original property opened in 1887 after entrepreneur Carl Kämp commissioned architect Theodor Höijer to design a five-storey hotel building on a prominent Esplanadi site. Kämp had acquired the plot in 1884 with the intention of creating a first-class hotel suitable for the capital's political, commercial and cultural life. The hotel's financing reflected the importance attached to the project. Kämp sought a state loan of 500,000 Finnish marks from the Finnish Senate, which approved 350,000 marks; the balance was supplied by neighbouring developer Fredrik Wilhelm Grönqvist. From its early years, Hotel Kämp served as an important setting for official receptions and elite social life. One documented event was a gala dinner and reception arranged by the German Empire's consulate to celebrate the birthday of German Emperor Wilhelm II. Hotel operations continued until 1967. During the 1960s, the original building was demolished as part of a redevelopment project. The site was subsequently associated with the headquarters of Kansallis-Osake-Pankki. Following the merger of Kansallis-Osake-Pankki and Suomen Yhdyspankki, ownership of the property passed to SYP and later to Merita Bank. The property's banking history nevertheless left open the possibility of restoring its hotel role. Interest from Sheraton executives helped revive plans for a new hotel on the former Kämp site. In the mid-1990s, Merita Bank director Ove Ohlström, investor Heikki Hyppönen and entrepreneur Mikael Bonsdorff worked with Sheraton representatives on a redevelopment concept that combined a hotel with a shopping centre. A major restoration and construction project began in 1996. Although the original structure had been lost, elements including the Pohjoisesplanadi-facing façade were reconstructed as copies and incorporated into the new building. Hotel Kämp and the Kämp Galleria shopping centre opened in 1999. The revived hotel became part of Marriott International's Luxury Collection, linking the Helsinki property to an international luxury-hotel network while retaining the Kämp name and historical identity. It is also a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. The hotel has hosted internationally known entertainers, musicians, actors and political or royal guests. Publicly associated guest names include Madonna, Shakira, Whitney Houston, Elton John, Lady Gaga, The Rolling Stones, Backstreet Boys, Justin Bieber, Bruce Springsteen, Mel Gibson and U2. Royal guests listed in reference material include Queen Noor of Jordan, Emperor Hirohito of Japan, and King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway. Ownership changed several times in the modern period. In January 2014, Berling Capital, owned by investor Esa Karppinen, sold the hotel to Finnish investment company CapMan. In 2019, Nordic Choice Hotels, the Norwegian hotel group owned by Petter A. Stordalen and subsequently renamed Strawberry, acquired Hotel Kämp from CapMan. A phased renovation began in 2023, with completion planned for 2026. The renovation is intended to maintain the hotel's historic character while updating the property for contemporary luxury hospitality. Hotel Kämp remains an operating Helsinki hotel and a flagship historic hospitality address in Finland.
History
Hotel Kämp originated in an ambitious nineteenth-century Helsinki development project. In 1884, Carl Kämp purchased a plot at the corner of North Esplanade and Glogatan with the goal of establishing a first-class hotel. Architect Theodor Höijer designed a five-storey building for the site. Kämp applied to the Finnish Senate for a state loan of 500,000 Finnish marks. The Senate approved 350,000 marks, while the remaining capital came from neighbouring developer Fredrik Wilhelm Grönqvist, whose Grönqvist Building stood across Glogatan. The hotel opened in 1887 and became an important luxury address in Finland. Its location in central Helsinki made it suitable for political, diplomatic and cultural gatherings. Among the events associated with the original hotel was a formal gala dinner and reception organised by the German Empire's consulate in honour of Emperor Wilhelm II's birthday. The hotel operated for approximately eight decades before closing in 1967. The original hotel building was demolished during redevelopment in the 1960s. The site was used for banking purposes, including as the headquarters of Kansallis-Osake-Pankki. After Kansallis-Osake-Pankki and Suomen Yhdyspankki merged to form Merita Bank, property ownership passed through the banking structure to SYP. The possibility of returning the site to hotel use gained momentum when Sheraton Hotels began examining Helsinki locations. Finnish consul Erkki Tammivuori connected Sheraton's interest with entrepreneur Mikael Bonsdorff, who proposed the former Kämp site on Esplanadi. In 1995, Merita Bank director Ove Ohlström met in Helsinki with investor Heikki Hyppönen, Bonsdorff and Sheraton representatives. The redevelopment plan expanded beyond a hotel to include a shopping centre. Construction and restoration activity began in 1996. Because the original building had been removed, the project reconstructed important historic elements, including the façade facing Pohjoisesplanadi, and integrated them into a new hotel building. Hotel Kämp and Kämp Galleria opened in 1999. The reopened property operated as part of Marriott International's Luxury Collection and later became a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Its revived identity rested on the combination of a historically important name, a reconstructed architectural setting and modern luxury-hotel services. The hotel has been associated with numerous internationally prominent entertainment figures and royal visitors, reinforcing its role as one of Helsinki's best-known luxury hospitality addresses. In January 2014, Berling Capital sold the hotel to CapMan. Nordic Choice Hotels acquired it from CapMan in 2019. Nordic Choice was subsequently renamed Strawberry, placing Hotel Kämp within that hotel group. A new phased renovation programme began in 2023, with completion planned for 2026. The renovation represents the latest stage in the property's continuing effort to preserve its heritage identity while maintaining contemporary hotel standards.
