According to its official history, it was founded in Paris by Jean-Francois Houbigant, who hung a hand-painted sign of a basket of flowers over his shop in rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The house states that its perfumers made groundbreaking discoveries in perfume formulation and that it became perfumer to royal courts of Europe. It also notes that Houbigant fragrances travelled in Napoleon's campaign chest, that in 1829 Houbigant was appointed perfumer to Her Royal Highness the Princess Adelaide d'Orleans, and that in 1838 the French house was awarded the license of 'Perfumer to Her Majesty'. The official history also claims that the perfumers of the House of Houbigant made groundbreaking discoveries in the formulation of perfumes that revolutionized the way perfumes are constructed, and that without the House of Houbigant, modern perfumery as we know it today would not exist.
