Overview

HRANI-T (Ukrainian: Грані-Т, literally 'Facets of Creativity') was a Ukrainian publishing house founded in February 2006 and based in Kyiv. It focused on two editorial priorities: children's literature and cultural studies (culturology). Its stated credo was to reveal new and sometimes unexpected facets of the creativity of writers, artists, editors and designers. By 2009 the publisher had released more than 300 books, most of them organised into themed series. Its children's series included 'Abetky' (ABC books), 'Biblioteka vidminnyka' (Honour Student's Library), 'Velyka modnytsia' (The Great Fashionista), 'Dyvnii detektyv' (Strange Detective), 'Dytiacha ironichna poeziia' (Children's Ironic Poetry), 'Dzhereltse' (Little Spring), 'Zhyttia vydatnykh ditei' (Lives of Outstanding Children), 'Zolotyi leleka' (Golden Stork), 'Kazky narodiv svitu' (Fairy Tales of the World's Peoples), 'Klasni komiksy' (Cool Comics), 'Suchasna dytiacha proza' (Contemporary Children's Prose), 'Ukrainska dytiacha klasyka' (Ukrainian Children's Classics), 'Ukrainska maisternia fantastyky' (Ukrainian Fantasy Workshop) and 'Knyhoterapiia' (Bibliotherapy). Its cultural series included 'De profundis' (Ukrainian and foreign essays) and 'Hrani svitu' (Facets of the World, gift albums), as well as guidebooks. HRANI-T was active in book fairs and charity events for children from socially vulnerable groups, orphans and children with disabilities. In 2009 it won the National 'Philanthropist of the Year' competition in the category 'Domestic Company — Small Business'. It ran the annual 'Best Review of Contemporary Children's Prose' competition from 2009 and, from 2011, a nationwide competition for the best lesson plan for extracurricular reading. It also ran the 'Pidvishena knyzhka' (Suspended Book) charity book-sharing campaign from 2012, and numerous literary, photographic and charitable projects. The publisher ceased operations around 2016, when its website was last updated; the site went offline in early 2019.

History

HRANI-T (Грані-Т) was founded in February 2006 as a Ukrainian publishing house with two declared priorities: children's literature and cultural studies. Its name, roughly 'Facets of Creativity', reflected a stated mission to reveal new and unexpected facets of writers, artists, editors and designers. By 2009 the publisher had issued more than 300 books, most of them grouped into series. The children's list included ABC books, the 'Honour Student's Library', 'The Great Fashionista', 'Strange Detective', children's ironic poetry, 'Little Spring', 'Lives of Outstanding Children', the 'Golden Stork' series (winners of the all-Ukrainian Golden Stork prose competition for children), 'Stories in Pictures for the Little Ones', 'Fairy Tales of the World's Peoples', 'Cool Comics' (comics based on Ukrainian classics), 'Molli Makhliui — Little Sorceress', 'Cartoon Studio', 'The Adventures of Detective Nytochka', colouring books, 'Rivals', 'Contemporary Children's Poetry', 'Contemporary Children's Prose', 'Ukrainian Children's Classics', 'Ukrainian Folk Tales with Knots', 'Ukrainian Fantasy Workshop' and 'Bibliotherapy' (books on physical and mental development). The cultural list included 'De profundis' (Ukrainian and foreign essays), 'Hrani svitu' (cultural gift albums) and guidebooks. The publisher took part in book fairs and charity actions for children from socially vulnerable groups, orphans and children with disabilities. In 2009 it was named winner of the National 'Philanthropist of the Year' competition in the 'Domestic Company — Small Business' category. From 2009 it ran the annual 'Best Review of Contemporary Children's Prose' competition with the Institute of Innovative Technologies and Educational Content, aimed at pupils in grades 4–5. From 2011 it launched an all-Ukrainian competition for the best lesson plan for extracurricular reading of contemporary Ukrainian literature for grades 5–9. In 2012 it joined the global 'Give if you can, take if you want' movement with the 'Pidvishena knyzhka' (Suspended Book) campaign, a non-commercial book-sharing project. It also ran charity projects such as the 'Hrani zdorovia' family club, 'Dotorknutysia do slova', 'Z knyhoiu — do ditei!', 'Vchysia peremahaty' and 'Dbaiemo pro maibutnie Ukrainy!', as well as literary projects including the Centre for Research on Literature for Children and Youth and the 'Litreactor' literary-creative project. Its awards included, in 2012, a first-degree diploma at the IX International 'Art of the Book' competition of CIS countries for 'Ship of Fools' by Sebastian Brant (illustrated by Yurii Charyshnikov), a third-degree diploma in the 'Book for Children and Youth' category for 'Solka and the Cook Tara-pata' by Oksana Lushchevska and Lana Svitankova (illustrated by Olha Havrylova), and a diploma in the all-Ukrainian '100 Best Goods' quality competition for the same title. The publisher ceased operations around 2016, when its website was last updated; the site stopped working in early 2019.
