Overview

HTC Corporation, originally known as High Tech Computer Corporation, is a Taiwanese consumer-electronics company headquartered in Taoyuan. Founded in 1997 by Cher Wang and H. T. Cho, the company began as an original design and original equipment manufacturer for notebook computers, personal digital assistants and other handheld devices. Its early engineering work placed it among the companies that helped develop touchscreen and wireless handheld products before smartphones became a mass-market category. During the 2000s, HTC became a significant supplier of devices based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platform. It manufactured products for operators and technology companies, while also selling devices under brands including Qtek and Dopod. In 2006, the company began consolidating its handset activities under the HTC name, helping establish a recognizable consumer brand. Its engineering and manufacturing capabilities made it an important partner for mobile operators and platform companies, particularly in the period before Android and iOS became dominant. HTC was a founding member of the Open Handset Alliance and released the HTC Dream in 2008. Marketed by T-Mobile in several countries as the T-Mobile G1, the Dream was the first commercially available smartphone running Android. HTC subsequently built a strong position in Android smartphones through products such as the Desire, Wildfire, Sensation and One families. The company differentiated itself through industrial design, camera and audio features, operator partnerships, and HTC Sense, a proprietary software interface layered over Android. It also continued to produce Windows Phone devices, including the HTC HD7 and a Windows Phone version of the HTC One (M8). HTC reached a peak in visibility around 2011, when it was described as the largest smartphone vendor in the United States during the third quarter. Its momentum later weakened as Apple and Samsung expanded their portfolios, marketing reach and carrier relationships, while other Android manufacturers increased price competition. Delayed launches, fragmented operator-specific models, inventory write-downs and reduced smartphone margins contributed to declining market share and repeated losses. The HTC One (M7) and One (M8) received strong design and product recognition, but their commercial performance did not restore the company’s former scale. The company diversified into immersive technology through a partnership with Valve. Announced in 2015, HTC Vive became the company’s principal virtual-reality platform, later expanding into premium, enterprise and standalone products such as Vive Pro and Vive Focus. HTC also explored connected devices, software, blockchain-oriented smartphones and other emerging technologies. In 2017, Google agreed to acquire approximately half of HTC’s design and research personnel and receive non-exclusive rights to smartphone-related intellectual property for approximately US$1.1 billion; the transaction was completed in 2018. HTC retained its corporate identity and continued developing smartphones and Vive products. Today HTC remains active, but its business is more narrowly focused than during its smartphone peak. Its portfolio includes Vive headsets and related software, smartphones such as the U series and selected newer devices, accessories, and research initiatives involving extended reality, artificial intelligence, blockchain and connected experiences. Cher Wang serves as chairwoman and returned as chief executive in 2020 after Yves Maitre stepped down.

History

HTC was established in 1997 by Cher Wang and H. T. Cho. Its initial business centered on designing and manufacturing notebook computers and handheld devices for other companies. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, HTC was developing touchscreen and wireless products at a time when personal digital assistants were evolving toward smartphone functionality. The company became an important Windows Mobile manufacturer. It produced operator-branded and partner-branded PDAs and smartphones, including devices associated with Compaq’s iPAQ and Dell’s Axim lines. HTC sold products under Qtek and later consolidated much of its own mobile-device activity under the HTC brand. In 2002, it participated in establishing Dopod International for sales in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau; HTC later acquired Dopod and discontinued the brand in 2010. HTC’s most consequential strategic shift came with Android. As a founding member of the Open Handset Alliance, it helped bring Google’s mobile operating system to market through the HTC Dream in 2008. The company expanded rapidly with Android phones and introduced HTC Sense, a software layer intended to make the user experience distinctive. HTC also produced Windows Phone hardware, including the HD7 and an M8 variant, but eventually concentrated primarily on Android as Microsoft’s platform faced limited ecosystem growth. The company’s smartphone business reached a high point around 2011. HTC was recognized by the GSMA, surpassed Nokia in reported global smartphone-market ranking during that period, and was identified by Canalys as the leading smartphone vendor in the United States in the third quarter. HTC’s international reputation was supported by products such as the Desire and Sensation families and by design recognition for the One line. From 2012 onward, competition from Apple, Samsung and lower-cost Android manufacturers eroded HTC’s share. The company acknowledged marketing and launch-execution problems, while operator-specific product variations and intense price competition made it harder to maintain a unified brand. The 2013 HTC One won design and smartphone awards, but sales were insufficient to reverse the company’s decline. HTC subsequently reported quarterly losses and continued restructuring its mobile operations. HTC pursued diversification through virtual reality. In 2015 it introduced Vive in partnership with Valve, creating a platform that combined headset hardware, motion tracking and VR software. Vive later expanded toward professional, enterprise and standalone applications. HTC also experimented with blockchain-related smartphones, including the Exodus line, and worked with outside partners on artificial intelligence, augmented reality, games and connected-device initiatives. In 2017, Google announced a transaction involving HTC’s design and research organization. Google acquired approximately half of the relevant employees, including personnel associated with Pixel development, and obtained non-exclusive rights to specified smartphone intellectual property. The transaction closed in January 2018. HTC continued operating independently, retaining its smartphone and Vive businesses while directing more resources toward emerging technologies. Leadership changed several times during the company’s retrenchment. Yves Maitre became CEO in 2019, succeeding Cher Wang, but resigned in 2020 for personal reasons. Wang then resumed the chief executive position while continuing as chairwoman. HTC remains an active Taiwanese technology company, with its strongest current identity tied to Vive and extended reality, alongside a smaller smartphone portfolio and ongoing work in software and connected experiences.
