Overview

Hubert De Backer nv, often abbreviated to HDB, is a Belgian family-owned plastics processing company founded in 1932 by Hubert De Backer. Originally named Etablissementen Hubert De Backer en Co, the firm began in Sint-Niklaas and moved its production to a larger facility on the industrial estate in Temse in 2000. The company specialises in the development and production of pharmaceutical and medical products and packaging made from plastic, and it also serves other sectors requiring precision plastic components. HDB's early products included lipstick holders, powder boxes and caps, but over time the focus shifted increasingly to the medical and pharmaceutical industry. A key turning point was the design in 1958 of an intramammary syringe for veterinary use, used in dairy cattle to prevent or treat bacterial infections; it became a flagship product. The company also produces dosing syringes for pain-relieving syrups for children. To meet the increasingly strict quality standards of the pharmaceutical sector, HDB installed its first laminar airflow cabinet in 1982 and has operated a cleanroom in its factory since 2003. The company applies various plastics processing techniques, mainly injection moulding and blow moulding of thermoplastics, as well as compression moulding of the thermosetting plastic Bakelite. Its product range includes intramammary injection syringes, oral paste syringes, oral dosing devices, intimate care products, ophthalmology items such as eye droppers and eye shields, and custom-made products. HDB emphasises a quality-oriented culture at every level, from development to production, and holds an ISO-certified quality management system. Leadership has passed through three generations: founder Hubert De Backer, his son Jan De Backer (active from 1975 as a mould maker and later managing director), and since 2013 Stijn De Backer. The company remains a private family business headquartered in Temse, Belgium, and serves customers worldwide through a network of representatives and partners.

History

Hubert De Backer nv was founded in 1932 by Hubert De Backer (born 1911), who had previously worked at Niko. He started the firm Conite together with his brother Albert. After a few years the brothers went their separate ways, and Hubert De Backer gave his own name to his company, initially called Etablissementen Hubert De Backer en Co. The business was originally located in Sint-Niklaas, in the Oude Molenstraat. In 2000 production moved to a larger building on the industrial estate in Temse. The company's first products included lipstick holders, powder boxes and caps. Gradually the focus shifted towards products for the medical and pharmaceutical industry. The first major step in this direction was a syringe for veterinary use designed in 1958, which grew into an absolute success product: an intramammary syringe used in dairy cattle to prevent or treat bacterial infections. Dosing syringes for pain-relieving syrups for children also became an important product for the company. As a supplier to the pharmaceutical sector, Hubert De Backer had to meet increasingly strict quality standards. In 1982 the company installed its first LAF cabinet (laminar airflow cabinet) intended to protect the materials used from environmental influences. Since 2003 there has been a cleanroom in the factory. Leadership passed to the second generation when son Jan De Backer (born 1950) became active in the company in 1975 as a mould maker and subsequently took over the management from his father Hubert. Since 2013 his son Stijn De Backer has led the company. The firm remains a family business and continues to develop and produce plastic products for medical and pharmaceutical applications, as well as custom solutions.
