Overview
Hubertus Bräu is a private brewery based in Laa an der Thaya in Lower Austria. Its origins reach back to the Middle Ages: the town of Laa received the brewing right in 1454 from Duke Ladislaus Postumus, and for centuries the right was leased out. In 1847 Anton Kühtreiber, then mayor of Laa, purchased both the brewing right and the brewery, laying the foundation for today's Hubertus Bräu. The family has run the brewery for six generations. The brewery produces a range of beers using soft water from its own well, hops from Saaz in the Czech Republic and Upper Austria, and malt from Burgenland and Lower Austria. Its portfolio includes around 15 beer specialties such as Märzen, Lager Classic, Herrn Pils and Keltenbier. In addition to beer, Hubertus Bräu sells mineral water and soft drinks under the Vitus brand, and operates as a beverage retailer and event technology provider, renting beer tables and tap systems for festivals. Historically, the brewery supplied the crown lands until World War I, but that market collapsed with the fall of the monarchy. Today its main sales area is the Weinviertel and Waldviertel regions up to Vienna, supported by several external warehouses. In 1978 a new fermentation and storage cellar was commissioned, followed by a new brewhouse in 1986. Since early 2022 the brewery has been a member of the Association of Independent Private Breweries of Austria. After Hermann Kühtreiber retired in 2025, the brewery was sold to a Laa consortium, with Andreas Kühtreiber taking over management.
History
The history of Hubertus Bräu reaches back to the Middle Ages. In 1454, Ladislaus Postumus, Duke of Austria, King of Bohemia and Hungary, granted the town of Laa an der Thaya the brewing right, in return for which the citizens had to deliver a barrel of beer on every high holiday. The town leased the brewing right until 1847. In that year, Anton Kühtreiber, then mayor of Laa, bought both the brewing right and the brewery, laying the foundation for today's Hubertus Bräu. Since then, the family has run the brewery for six generations. Until World War I, the brewery also supplied the crown lands, but this market collapsed with the disintegration of the monarchy. Today, the main sales area is the Weinviertel and Waldviertel regions up to Vienna, and several external warehouses are maintained in these areas. In 1978, a new fermentation and storage cellar was commissioned, and in 1986, a new brewhouse went into operation. In the second half of the 20th century, a second deep well was drilled near the existing one, providing hard water from an artesian source dedicated to St. Vitus. This water was recognized as mineral water in the 1970s and is marketed as Vitus mineral water and lemonades. In the 1950s and early 1960s, the brewery also produced baking malt extract in its malthouse for regional bakers. Since early 2022, the brewery has been a member of the Association of Independent Private Breweries of Austria. After Hermann Kühtreiber retired in 2025, the brewery was sold to a Laa consortium, and Andreas Kühtreiber took over management.
