Overview
Hugo Benzing GmbH & Co. KG is a German, family-managed industrial manufacturer based in Korntal-Münchingen, on the outskirts of Stuttgart. The company describes itself as one of the world's leading manufacturers of safety elements — precision components that secure, retain, and protect moving parts in machines and vehicles. Its main facility covers more than 30,000 m² and produces a broad range of metal and plastic parts, including retaining rings and lock washers, wire form parts, snap rings, stampings, fine blanking parts, bent wire and bent sheet metal parts, deep-drawn parts, turned and milled parts, die cast parts, and valves. Since its founding more than 90 years ago, the company states it has produced more than 125 billion units in total; lined up, these precision parts would reach 20 times around the globe. The company was founded in 1933 by Hugo Benzing in Dresden, where he invented the original DIN 6799 Benzing retaining ring and developed a profile grinding machine that enabled production of eccentric shapes. The first delivery to Mercedes Benz followed in 1936. After Hugo Benzing's death, his son Peter Benzing took over management in 1945, and the company relocated to Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen in 1948. Over the decades, Benzing has accumulated more than 270 patents and industrial property rights. Today the business remains medium-sized and family-managed, with its central site in direct proximity to major customers. Benzing's product portfolio comprises more than 22,000 different articles, made of aluminium, steel, or stainless steel, with optional surface or special treatments. All products are made on tool units specifically developed in-house. Beyond classic fasteners, the company supplies complex, fully comprehensive security systems such as parking locks and parking lock actuators for electric vehicles, producing individual components like connecting rods in-house. Its range is rounded off by high-performance safety elements for e-mobility — bursting discs and venting or bursting valves — grouped under the specially created BENZINGVENTS series. Customers come from every conceivable sector. In addition to the automotive and aircraft industries, the precision-mechanics, electrical-engineering, and medical-technology industries rely on Benzing's precision and quality. The company positions itself on comprehensive development know-how, many years of technical competence, individual solution competence, quick order processing, highest precision, and reliable quality from a single source. Its products are used wherever something is moving around the world, with accuracy down to a thousandth of a millimeter.
History
Hugo Benzing was an engineer and inventor who, in the early 20th century while living and working in Cleveland, Ohio, designed fasteners for mechanical and electrified technologies. Among his inventions was the lever mechanism that prints individual letters onto paper in a typewriter. His close friend and business partner A. A. Newman had opened a shop for portable watches equipped with movements from Württembergische Uhrenfabrik Bürk in Schwenningen in 1902. After returning to Germany, Hugo Benzing focused on fastening and connecting elements, founding the Hugo Benzing company in 1933 in Dresden. The first factory there provided the environment for his tinkering; a profile grinding machine that allowed production of eccentric shapes, such as the original DIN 6799 Benzing retaining ring, dates to this period. This was the first of more than 270 patents and industrial property rights granted to the company in the decades to come. Key early milestones include the invention of DIN 6799 and the company's foundation in 1933, the development of a profile grinding machine in 1934, and the first delivery to Mercedes Benz in 1936. After the death of his father, Dipl. Ing. Peter Benzing took over management in 1945. In 1948 the company relocated to Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. From 1952 to 1966, Dipl. Ing. Hermann Benzing was a member of the management board. Over the following decades, Benzing expanded its product range from retaining rings and lock washers into wire form parts, snap rings, stampings, fine blanking parts, bent wire and bent sheet metal parts, deep-drawn parts, turned and milled parts, die cast parts, and valves. By the 2020s, the company had produced more than 125 billion units in total, a quantity that, lined up, would reach 20 times around the globe. Its cutting-edge main facility of more than 30,000 m² is located in Korntal-Münchingen, near Stuttgart. The company remains medium-sized and family-managed, describing itself as one of the world's leading manufacturers of safety elements. It has added complex security systems such as parking locks and parking lock actuators for electric vehicles, producing individual components like connecting rods in-house. Its portfolio also includes high-performance safety elements for e-mobility — bursting discs and venting or bursting valves — grouped under the BENZINGVENTS series. Today Benzing serves customers from the automotive, aircraft, precision-mechanics, electrical-engineering, and medical-technology industries, with products used wherever something is moving around the world.
