Overview
HUMA Einkaufspark Sankt Augustin — also known as HUMA Shopping & Outlet or huma Shoppingwelt — is a shopping centre in Sankt Augustin-Ort, Germany, and the largest such centre in the eastern Rhein-Sieg district. It sits at the eastern edge of the Karl-Gatzweiler-Platz (the so-called Marktplatte) in the town centre, surrounded by additional shops, the town hall, a hotel and office buildings. Two multi-storey car parks, Parkhaus West toward Rathausallee and Parkhaus Ost toward Bonner Straße, together provide more than 2,300 parking spaces, and the centre is directly connected to public transport via the Augustiner bus station and the Sankt Augustin Zentrum light-rail stop on Bonner Straße. The centre opened in 1977 as the Hurler Magazin, developed by the Munich wholesaler Jost Hurler and commonly shortened to HuMa-Markt. The original building housed roughly 50 shops, with Real, Saturn and Intersport Voswinkel as anchor tenants, and offered about 61,000 m² of total space and 42,000 m² of lettable area across two levels above the raised Marktplatte plus one level below. A pedestrian bridge crossed the railway tracks. A comprehensive rebuild began with a groundbreaking in 2013, designed by the architecture firm Chapman Taylor and executed in two phases. The first new building opened in 2015 and absorbed most existing tenants along with new shops; the old building was then demolished and replaced by the second phase, completed on 28 September 2017. The redevelopment expanded the sales area to 39,000 m². Parkhaus West was completed with the first phase in 2015 and Parkhaus Ost with the second phase in 2017. In 2018 a park was created on the former car park on Südstraße. Today the centre hosts more than 90 shops and, since 2025, an outlet section on the upper floor featuring over 30 fashion and lifestyle brands at discounts of 30–70%. Its tenant mix spans fashion, technology, gastronomy and more. Since November 2018 an ecumenical association has operated a "Lebensraum Kirche" (church living space) inside the centre, offering visitors a place of rest.
History
The origins of the HUMA centre lie in a study commissioned in the early 1970s from the Institut für empirische Wirtschaftsforschung in Saarbrücken on the establishment of a shopping centre in Sankt Augustin. The centre was built in the 1970s together with the town hall as the core of the newly created municipality of Sankt Augustin. The building was opened in 1977 as the Hurler Magazin by the Munich wholesaler Jost Hurler, abbreviated as HuMa-Markt. It contained about 50 shops, with Real, Saturn and Intersport Voswinkel as anchor tenants. The centre had two levels above the raised Marktplatte and one below, which was thus at ground level with the area behind it. It had a total area of 61,000 m² and a lettable area of 42,000 m². A pedestrian bridge led over the railway tracks. In 2013 the groundbreaking took place for a new building, realised in two construction phases. The new build followed plans by the architecture firm Chapman Taylor. By 2015 a first new building was erected, into which most of the previous tenants as well as some new shops moved. The old building was then demolished and the second construction phase was built in its place. Since the completion of the first phase in 2015 the centre has been referred to as the huma Shoppingwelt. The new building, which expanded the sales area to 39,000 m², was completed on 28 September 2017. Parkhaus West was finished in 2015 together with the first new-build phase, and Parkhaus Ost in 2017 together with the second phase. In 2018 a park was created on the former car park on Südstraße. The centre today contains over 90 shops and, since 2025, outlets on the upper floor. Since November 2018 there has been a "Lebensraum Kirche" operated by an ecumenical association, offering visitors to the shopping centre a place of rest.
