Overview
Human Horizons Technology was a Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Shanghai. Founded in August 2017 by Ding Lei, the company pursued a technology-led approach to premium electric mobility, combining vehicle development with smart-car software, connected functions, and advanced manufacturing. Its vehicles were marketed under the HiPhi marque rather than primarily under the Human Horizons corporate name. The company publicly adopted the Human Horizons name on 25 October 2018, when it also presented three concept vehicles. In July 2019, it introduced the HiPhi brand and the HiPhi 1 concept, establishing the design and product direction that would lead to its first production vehicle. Human Horizons positioned HiPhi at the luxury end of the Chinese electric-car market, emphasizing distinctive body architectures, electronically controlled access features, high levels of connectivity, and a premium ownership experience. Its first production model, the HiPhi X, was introduced as a luxury pure-electric vehicle in September 2020, with deliveries to Chinese customers beginning on 8 May 2021. The company subsequently broadened its range with the HiPhi Z, announced in November 2021, and the HiPhi Z GT, released in March 2022. A third model, the larger crossover HiPhi Y, debuted in April 2023 and was positioned below the flagship HiPhi X. Human Horizons also announced plans to enter European markets, initially with the HiPhi X. In November 2023, it presented the high-performance HiPhi A, derived from the HiPhi Z line. Human Horizons operated a production and assembly smart plant in Yancheng, Jiangsu, and maintained a parts-boutique prototype facility in Jinqiao, Shanghai. The company’s strategy depended on substantial investment in product development, manufacturing, retail infrastructure, and brand expansion. By early 2024, however, it faced serious financial and operating pressures. It closed large showrooms in Chengdu and Guangzhou in January, suspended work at its research and development center, and implemented major cost reductions. In February 2024, the company confirmed a six-month suspension of operations covering new-product development and production of existing vehicles; employees were also reported to have faced salary reductions of as much as 70 percent. After efforts to secure new owners or strategic partners did not succeed, Human Horizons filed for bankruptcy in early August 2024. The bankruptcy ended the company’s active vehicle-manufacturing operations, although its HiPhi products and technology remain part of the history of China’s early premium electric-vehicle market.
History
Human Horizons was established in August 2017 by Ding Lei as a Chinese technology and electric-mobility company. Its headquarters were in Shanghai, while its industrial footprint included a production and assembly smart plant in Yancheng, Jiangsu, and a parts-boutique prototype factory in Shanghai’s Jinqiao area. The company sought to combine vehicle manufacturing with software, connectivity, and intelligent-production capabilities. On 25 October 2018, the company formally used the Human Horizons name and presented three concept vehicles. This public introduction helped define its ambition to operate beyond the conventional image of a car manufacturer, with emphasis on future mobility and intelligent vehicles. On 31 July 2019, it launched the HiPhi marque together with the HiPhi 1 concept. HiPhi became the customer-facing vehicle brand through which Human Horizons pursued the premium electric-car market. The first production model was the HiPhi X, a luxury battery-electric vehicle launched in September 2020. Customer deliveries in China began on 8 May 2021. The company then announced the HiPhi Z in November 2021 and released the HiPhi Z GT on 31 March 2022. These vehicles extended the range from a luxury crossover toward a more design-focused and performance-oriented model family. In April 2023, Human Horizons introduced the HiPhi Y, a large crossover positioned below the HiPhi X. Around the same period, it announced plans to begin selling the HiPhi X in Europe. The HiPhi A, a high-performance derivative associated with the HiPhi Z, was presented in November 2023. Despite the expansion of its product portfolio, Human Horizons encountered severe financial difficulties at the beginning of 2024. In January, it closed large showrooms in Chengdu and Guangzhou and suspended activity at its research and development center. In February, management confirmed a six-month halt to operations, including the development of new products and production of current vehicles. Employees were also subjected to substantial salary reductions, reportedly reaching up to 70 percent, while being encouraged to seek other employment. The company explored possible ownership changes, including a sale of shares or cooperation through a joint venture, but these efforts did not produce a successful rescue. Human Horizons filed for bankruptcy in early August 2024. Its collapse brought the active phase of the Human Horizons and HiPhi manufacturing venture to an end after less than a decade of operation.
