Overview
The Hungarian Alzheimer Society (Hungarian: Feledékeny Emberek Hozzátartozóinak Társasága, FEHT) is a Hungarian non-profit, public-benefit association founded in 1999. Its full Hungarian name translates as the Society of Relatives of Forgetful (People Living with Alzheimer's Disease and Other Memory Disorders) People, and it is the Hungarian national member organisation of Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), one of ADI's 84 national member associations. The organisation's central mission is to support people living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, together with their family caregivers, and to advocate for their interests. It provides information and counselling, individual and group consultations, practical and emotional assistance, caregiver training, and representation of patients and caregivers before government and decision-making bodies. It also works to raise public awareness of dementia, to dispel misconceptions about the condition, and to have dementia recognised as a health priority in Hungary. The Society cooperates with psychiatrists, neurologists and geriatricians, with the health and social care network, and with domestic and international organisations. It formulates recommendations to the government, including on resolving the unsettled health and social care situation of people living with Alzheimer's disease, and has long urged that Hungary adopt a national dementia strategy in line with World Health Organization and ADI recommendations. Its programmes include professional conferences, memorial concerts and awareness campaigns. It ran a memory club between 2000 and 2005, which was discontinued for lack of suitable premises and funding. Since 2001 it has organised events for World Alzheimer's Day on 21 September each year, and it stages its 'Memory Bridge' concerts and campaign to combat misconceptions about the disease. It participates in international Alzheimer's conferences; in 2012 it won the right to host ADI's 31st Alzheimer's World Conference, and it was one of the organisers of the event held in Budapest in 2016. On the occasion of the 2016 world conference the Society made an eight-point proposal to the government to improve the situation of people living with dementia and to support the 'Global Brain Health Community' initiative organised for prevention. Its website, alzheimerweb.hu, allows people in need of help to make contact and publishes its publications and some of its programmes. The Society is led by a three-member presidency, whose members are the president (Éva Himmer) and two vice-presidents. Its governing bodies are the general assembly, the presidency and a body of advisers with a professional advisory role.
History
The Hungarian Alzheimer Society was founded in 1999 as a non-profit association under the Hungarian name Feledékeny Emberek Hozzátartozóinak Társasága (FEHT). Its full name is Feledékeny (Alzheimer-kórral és más emlékezetzavarral élő) Emberek Hozzátartozóinak Társasága, and its English name is Hungarian Alzheimer Society. It is one of the 84 national member organisations of Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), a status it has held for many years, including in 2017. From its foundation, the association's principal aim has been to help ensure a good quality of life and long-term, loving care for people with dementia and their caregiving family members. Its goals include familiarising broad sections of the population with knowledge about dementia, dispelling misconceptions about the disease, and achieving recognition of dementia as a priority health issue in Hungary. It considers it important to provide practical help to those affected, offering information and counselling, personal and group consultations, practical and emotional assistance, caregiver training, and advocacy for patients and caregivers vis-à-vis government and decision-making bodies. The Society cooperates with psychiatrists, neurologists and geriatricians, with the health and social care network, and with domestic and international organisations. It makes recommendations to the government, including on resolving the unsettled health and social care situation of people living with Alzheimer's disease. It has long urged that, in line with recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and ADI, a national dementia strategy be established in Hungary as soon as possible. Among its programmes and projects, the association organises professional conferences, memorial concerts and awareness campaigns, and offers concrete group activities for those who turn to it. One such form was the memory club, which operated between 2000 and 2005 but could not be continued 'for lack of suitable premises and funding'. Since 2001 the association has organised the events of World Alzheimer's Day (21 September) every year. In the spirit of dispelling misconceptions surrounding the disease, it holds its concerts and campaign called Memory Bridge. It takes part in international Alzheimer's conferences. In 2012 it won the right to host ADI's 31st Alzheimer's World Conference and was one of the organisers of the event held in Budapest in 2016. On the occasion of the 2016 world conference, the Society made an eight-point proposal to the government to improve the situation of people living with dementia and to support the 'Global Brain Health Community' initiative organised for prevention. Its website allows people in need of help to register, and publishes its publications and some of its programmes. However, updating of the 'Aktualitások' (Current Affairs) page had been suspended since the 2014 world day, as of September 2017. The organisation's bodies are the general assembly, the presidency and the body of advisers (with a professional advisory role). Its activities are directed by a three-member presidency, whose members are the president (Éva Himmer) and two vice-presidents.
