Overview

The Hungarian Beekeepers Federation (Hungarian: Országos Magyar Méhészeti Egyesület, OMME) is Hungary's national apicultural association, founded in 1879. It is a professional body that represents beekeepers, publishes technical journals, organizes congresses and exhibitions, and provides services to its members. Its headquarters are in Budapest, at Viola u. 50. (1094), with a postal address at Bíró Lajos utca 51. (1089). The organization maintains a website at omme.hu, offering beekeeping news, advertisements, information on bee pastures, swarm capture and wasp control, and sections for honey lovers and children. It also engages in joint campaigns with partner organizations. The OMME has a long history of promoting Hungarian apiculture, dating back to its first general assembly in December 1879 and the launch of its journal Méhészeti Lapok. Over the decades it has adapted to changing agricultural and market conditions, and in the 21st century it continues to be led by elected officials, with Bross Péter serving as president in multiple periods, most recently re-elected in April 2016. As a non-profit association, it is not a commercial company but a trade organization that supports the beekeeping sector in Hungary.

History

The Hungarian Beekeepers Federation (Országos Magyar Méhészeti Egyesület, OMME) was founded in 1879 and has operated continuously since then. Its origins trace back to the efforts of Abbot Göndöcs Benedek, who established a beekeeping association in Békésgyula in 1873 and organized an exhibition and beekeeping pavilion there, which opened on 1 May 1877. While serving as a member of parliament, Göndöcs, along with university professor Kriesch János and other specialists, worked to create a national beekeeping association. In the spring of 1879, they issued a call to beekeepers across the country to establish the OMME. The association held its first regular general assembly on 6 December 1879, and six weeks later launched its technical journal, Méhészeti Lapok, edited by Kriesch János. After Kriesch's death in 1888, Tanos Pál became editor. From 1884, a German-language journal, Blätter für Bienenzucht, was also published, initially edited by Kriesch and later by Kühne and Binder. Later, the association's journals appeared under the titles Magyar Méh and Ungarische Biene, edited by Binder Iván and Kühne Ferenc respectively. The OMME organized beekeeping congresses in Budapest in 1882, in Békésgyula in 1883, and again in Budapest in 1885 on the occasion of the national exhibition. At the 1887 congress in Székesfehérvár, it prepared the 37th wandering assembly of German-Austrian and Hungarian beekeepers, which was combined with a larger beekeeping exhibition in the industrial hall. The association also participated in the 1890 Vienna agricultural exhibition and worked to ensure a worthy representation of beekeeping at the millennium exhibition. In the 21st century, Bross Péter was re-elected president in April 2016, having previously served as president from 2004 to 2012. The OMME continues to be a central organization for Hungarian beekeepers, providing information, advocacy, and community services.
