Overview
Hunter Engineering Company is an American company founded by Lee Hunter. It designs, manufactures and sells a wide range of auto service equipment for a global market, including PC- and Windows-based wheel alignment systems, computerized wheel balancers, tire changers, brake lathes, vehicle lifts and inspection equipment. History
Hunter Engineering Company owes its beginnings to a discharged automobile battery. Lee Hunter Jr., a 23-year-old St. Louis architecture student, frequently faced car battery failure in his Packard convertible. When experts said it couldn't be done, Lee Hunter invented a way to quick charge automobile batteries, then built a company to manufacture and sell his inventions. In 1936 the company introduced Kwikurent, described as the world's first rapid battery charger, reducing charging time from 24 hours or more to less than an hour. In 1938 it introduced the Rocket Special, a more compact charger with a dual-charge test meter and 100-ampere output. After serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Ordnance Corps during World War II, Lee Hunter returned home to St. Louis in 1946 to open Hunter Engineering Company. Today Hunter Engineering Company designs, manufactures and sells a wide range of auto service equipment for a global market.
