History

Huracán Motors S.A. was founded in Barcelona on April 30, 1956, by businessman José María Duran Balet. The company specialized in the manufacture of motorcycles and tricycles, addressing the need for economical and versatile means of transport. The foundation arose from a passion for motors, rooted in the family, as his uncles Domingo and Enrique Balet Duran owned the Auto Garage Términus, a relevant car dealership of the early 20th century. The company was known for being the exclusive distributor of Benz in Spain (now Mercedes Benz), selling the first car to King Alfonso XIII, giving him private driving lessons, and later being nominated as Purveyors to the Royal Household. They also held the first vehicle auctions (unique in Spain at that time) and published their own free magazine called Barcelona Automóvil. This was an era of great expansion of the motorcycle industry in Spain, which exported up to 80% of production abroad, with brands of international prestige such as Derbi (1922), Alpha (1924), Rieju (1934), Sanglas (1942), Montesa (1944), Ossa (1948), Bultaco (1958), among many others. The company was announced in the Official State Gazette (B.O.E.) No. 143 of May 22, 1956.
