Overview

i-MALL MIYOSHI (アイ・モール三好) is a shopping center located in Miyoshi, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, along National Route 153 between Nagoya and Toyota. It opened on October 28, 2000, with JUSCO Miyoshi as its core store. The center was originally developed as a locally led shopping center by a third-sector company, Miyoshi Commerce Promotion Co., Ltd., formed with investment from Miyoshi Town (now Miyoshi City), the Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, and local merchants. The specialty store area was managed by Miyoshi Commerce Promotion, while the core store and large specialty tenants (including Toys "R" Us and MOVIX Miyoshi) were managed by Shin-Shogyo-Toshi Co., Ltd. In 2018, Miyoshi Commerce Promotion was dissolved, and AEON Retail took over operations. The center is anchored by AEON Miyoshi, which was renamed from JUSCO Miyoshi in 2011 following AEON Group's GMS restructuring. It comprises the core store and 66 specialty stores. The name "i-MALL" incorporates the meanings of "love" (愛, ai), "encounter" (出会い, deai), and "interaction" (ふれあい, fureai), expressing the wish for a shopping center that is always loved. The facility includes MOVIX Miyoshi, a cinema complex on the third floor of the west wing, which is one of the largest cinemas in the region. The center serves a trade area of approximately 150,000 people within a 5 km radius and 860,000 within 10 km. It has undergone renovations, including a renewal in 2020 and the opening of MUJI in 2024. In July 2024, AEON Miyoshi was renovated, and the center was designated as a cooling shelter under a climate change adaptation agreement with Miyoshi City.

History

The origins of i-MALL MIYOSHI date back to a study group established in 1988. Because the development was large-scale, it took time to change the land use designation and negotiations with landowners were difficult, so 12 years passed before opening. At the time, the mainstream shopping center format in Japan was the box-type store, with specialty stores merely complementing the general merchandise store (GMS). However, based on American examples, the developers predicted that specialty-store-centered malls would become mainstream and adopted the mall-type SC. For the core store, a competition was held among about 10 companies, and JUSCO (now AEON) was chosen due to the familiarity of executives and its track record in operating mall-type SCs. The center opened on October 28, 2000, with JUSCO Miyoshi as the core store. It was operated as a locally led shopping center by Miyoshi Commerce Promotion Co., Ltd., a third-sector company funded by Miyoshi Town (which became a city in 2010, now Miyoshi City), the Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, and local merchants. Miyoshi Commerce Promotion managed the specialty store area, while Shin-Shogyo-Toshi Co., Ltd. managed the core store and large specialty tenants such as Toys "R" Us and MOVIX Miyoshi. On March 1, 2011, JUSCO Miyoshi was renamed AEON Miyoshi due to AEON Group's GMS business restructuring. In 2017, UNIQLO i-MALL Miyoshi closed on October 29, and Nitori Deco Home i-MALL Miyoshi opened on December 29. On October 31, 2018, Miyoshi Commerce Promotion Co., Ltd., which operated the specialty store area, was dissolved. From November 1, 2018, AEON Retail took over operations. The center was renewed in 2020. In 2024, MUJI i-MALL Miyoshi opened on April 26, and AEON Miyoshi was renewed in July. On July 24, 2024, Miyoshi City and AEON Retail signed an agreement under the Climate Change Adaptation Act to designate the center as a cooling shelter (designated heat refuge facility). The center is located along National Route 153 (Toyota Nishi Bypass) and is about 10 minutes by car from Tomei Miyoshi IC via Aichi Prefectural Route 54. It is accessible by Meitetsu Bus and San San Bus from nearby stations. The facility consists of the core store AEON Miyoshi and 66 specialty stores. MOVIX Miyoshi, a cinema complex, opened simultaneously with the SC on the third floor of the west wing and is one of the largest cinemas in the region, with a larger capacity than nearby TOHO Cinemas Akaike.
