Overview

The IASA-Ländergruppe Deutschland/Schweiz e. V. is the regional branch (Ländergruppe) for Germany and Switzerland of the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA), a non-governmental organisation founded in Amsterdam in 1969 and represented as an NGO at UNESCO. The regional group was founded on 25 April 1990 in Wiesbaden during the meeting of Fachgruppe 7 of the Verein deutscher Archivare, and was confirmed as an IASA Regional Branch by the IASA General Assembly on 7 May 1990 in Ottawa. Its first chairman was Jean-Claude Hayoz of the Documentation Centre of the Swiss Federal Assembly; further board members were Monika Brandenstein (Rundfunk der DDR) and Felix Kresing-Wulf (Deutsche Welle). The association's purpose is to foster cooperation among all archives that preserve sound and, increasingly, audiovisual documents. It addresses all questions related to the work of institutional and significant private collections and archives: acquisition, documentation, storage, use and preservation. Copyright and discography belong to the IASA's scope as do the maintenance of recording, processing and playback techniques and the development of recommendations for the long-term preservation of sound recordings. The regional group discusses the working results of the international IASA specialist commissions at regional and national level and, conversely, feeds questions and suggestions back to these bodies and to the IASA board. It particularly seeks to involve institutions and private individuals who collect sound documents and related materials or who have an interest in these tasks and goals. The group has its registered office at the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek in Frankfurt am Main. Its members include the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, the Schweizerische Nationalphonothek, the Klaus-Kuhnke-Archiv für Populäre Musik, the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt, the Günter Grass Stiftung Bremen, the Lippmann+Rau-Musikarchiv, the Deutsches Literaturarchiv, the Weserburg Museum für moderne Kunst, Frank Wonneberg, and the Hochschularchiv/Thüringisches Landesmusikarchiv Weimar. Since 1998 it has published the information organ "Schall & Rauch" with specialist articles, conference contributions and conference reports; the first issue appeared in May 1998 in the Birgit-Lotz-Verlag Bonn. Previously, the group used "Capitolium", the newsletter of the Schweizerische Landesphonothek, for member information. The group maintains a close exchange of experience with the Austrian IASA group Medien Archive Austria, especially since the joint annual meeting in Vienna in 2008. Within the international IASA, both regional groups have been held in high esteem as particularly active sections for years. The current chair, since November 2022, is Katrin Abromeit of the Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.

History

The IASA-Ländergruppe Deutschland/Schweiz e. V. was founded on 25 April 1990 in Wiesbaden during the meeting of Fachgruppe 7 of the Verein deutscher Archivare. Its first chairman was Jean-Claude Hayoz of the Dokumentationszentrale der Bundesversammlung der Schweiz. Further board members were Monika Brandenstein (Rundfunk der DDR) and Felix Kresing-Wulf (Deutsche Welle). The group was confirmed as an IASA Regional Branch by the IASA General Assembly on 7 May 1990 in Ottawa. The first official annual general meeting as an IASA regional group was held on 30 April 1991 during the Fachgruppe 7 meeting at the Phonothek in Vienna. In October 1991 the first independent annual meeting followed, hosted by Deutsche Welle in Cologne. From autumn 1998 the regional group appeared on the internet, initially on the website of the Klaus-Kuhnke-Archiv Bremen, with its managing director Ulrich Duve as webmaster. In spring 1999 its own homepage was launched at www.iasa-online.de. A close exchange of experience exists with the Austrian IASA group Medien Archive Austria, especially since the joint annual meeting in Vienna in 2008. Within the international IASA, both regional groups have been held in high esteem as particularly active sections for years. The association has its registered office at the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek in Frankfurt am Main. Even after the founding of the IASA regional group as an independent association, there was a close connection to Fachgruppe 7, at whose annual spring meeting the regional group organised the "Arbeitssitzung der AG-Tondokumente" with topics of sound archiving. Due to the restructuring of the FG7 meetings, this working session took place for the last time in 2000. In 1997, on the initiative of Rainer Lotz, the project "Firmen-Discographien historischer Tonträger (FDHT)" started, which after a difficult start found a home in modified form at the Schweizerische Nationalphonothek in Lugano. Since 1998 the regional group has published "Schall & Rauch" as an information organ for its members, with specialist articles, conference contributions and conference reports; the first issue appeared in May 1998 in the Birgit-Lotz-Verlag Bonn. In the years before, "Capitolium", the newsletter of the Schweizerische Landesphonothek, was used for member information. The chairs of the regional group have been: 1990–1991 Jean-Claude Hayoz (Bern, Dokumentationszentrale der Bundesversammlung der Schweiz); 1991–1994 Frank Rainer Huck (Saarbrücken, Saarländischer Rundfunk); 1994–1997 Anke Leenings (Frankfurt am Main, Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv); 1997–2003 Kurt Deggeller (Lugano, Schweizerische Landesphonothek); 2003–2009 Michael Crone (Frankfurt am Main, Hessischer Rundfunk); 2009–2016 Pio Pellizzari (Lugano, Schweizerische Nationalphonothek); 2016–2022 Ulrich Duve (Bremen, Klaus-Kuhnke-Archiv für Populäre Musik); since 2022 Katrin Abromeit (Vienna, Phonogrammarchiv der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften).
