IBO-Verlag

IBO-Verlag is the publishing arm of the IBO – Österreichisches Institut für Bauen und Ökologie (Austrian Institute for Building and Ecology), a Vienna-based organization dedicated to ecological building, healthy living, and sustainable construction. The institute traces its origins to 1980, when it was founded as an independent, non-profit scientific association (Verein) researching the interactions between people, buildings, and the environment. The commercial entity, IBO – Österreichisches Institut für Bauen und Ökologie GmbH, was established in 1997 to provide services alongside research and knowledge dissemination. IBO-Verlag publishes the institute's findings, including the annual IBO yearbook (Jahrbuch), the IBO Magazin, and various technical publications on building materials, building physics, and sustainability. The organization operates from Alserbachstraße 5/8 in Vienna's 9th district and serves architects, builders, manufacturers, and the general public in Austria and the wider European Union. Its work spans material ecology, building assessment, building physics, and measurements, with services such as product testing, life-cycle assessments, EPDs, and the IBO ÖKOPASS building certification. The IBO Verein (association) acts as the program operator of the IBO Prüfzeichen (test mark), and membership is open to individuals, professionals, and companies. Through its publishing activities, IBO-Verlag makes specialized knowledge on ecological construction accessible to a broad audience, supporting the institute's mission of promoting environmentally sound and health-conscious building practices.

The IBO – Österreichisches Institut für Bauen und Ökologie (Austrian Institute for Building and Ecology) began in 1980 as an independent, non-profit scientific association (Verein) dedicated to researching the interactions between people, buildings, and the environment. Its founding mission was to develop and promote the principles of ecological and sustainable architecture. For nearly two decades, the institute operated primarily as a research and knowledge-dissemination organization. In 1997, the commercial entity IBO – Österreichisches Institut für Bauen und Ökologie GmbH was founded to complement the association's research with professional services. These services include material ecology (product testing, life-cycle assessments, EPDs for building materials), building assessment (IBO ÖKOPASS, klimaaktiv Bauen und Sanieren, EU Green Building, passive house certification), building physics (construction and procedures, building simulations, sound insulation and acoustics, moisture damage), and measurements (sound, moisture, comfort). The publishing activities, under the IBO-Verlag imprint, grew out of the institute's commitment to knowledge dissemination. IBO-Verlag publishes the annual IBO Jahrbuch (yearbook), the IBO Magazin, and various technical publications. The IBO Verein acts as the program operator of the IBO Prüfzeichen (test mark), and membership is open to private individuals, professionals, and companies. The organization is headquartered at Alserbachstraße 5/8, 1090 Vienna, Austria. As of the 2020s, IBO continues to be active in research projects, events such as the BauZ! congress, and webinars, and remains a key player in the Austrian and European ecological building scene.
