Overview

Ibrachy & Dermarkar (commonly abbreviated as I&D) is an Egyptian full-service law firm headquartered in Dokki, Giza. It was established in 1932 by Maître Charles Chalom, who at the time was head of the Bar Association of the Mixed Courts. In 1952, Hassan and Hussein El Ibrachy and Said Dermarkar entered into a partnership agreement with Mr. Chalom, forming the firm Chalom, Ibrachy & Dermarkar. Following Mr. Chalom's death in 1956, the firm was renamed Ibrachy & Dermarkar. It is considered one of the oldest specialized law firms in Egypt and is currently led by its fourth-generation leadership. The firm provides a comprehensive range of legal services to both domestic and international clients, including corporate law, arbitration, litigation, and specialized advisory services in sectors such as energy, telecommunications, construction, and more. Its practice areas span general corporate law, banking and finance, dispute resolution (arbitration and mediation), intellectual property, real estate and construction, labor and employment, and sector-specific expertise in agriculture, airlines, automotive, building materials, food and beverage, and heavy industries. I&D has a long history of advising on landmark transactions in Egypt, including the first management buyout in Egyptian history in the food industry, the acquisition of a controlling interest in an Egyptian ceramic company (one of the largest transactions on the stock exchange), and the full acquisition of the largest cement manufacturer in Egypt by a major European player. The firm also has deep experience in the airline business, having represented the founding members of major airline alliances before their formation. Positioning itself as a firm that seeks to be the best rather than the largest, I&D emphasizes specialization and regional cooperation. Its vision is to develop core expertise in areas not broadly recognized in Egyptian legal practice, pioneering such fields to bring best international law practices to the Egyptian market. The firm is set to further expand regionally and lead the market in various legal services.

History

Ibrachy & Dermarkar was established in 1932 by Maître Charles Chalom, who was then head of the Bar Association of the Mixed Courts. The firm prospered and represented many major businesses, including most of the companies of the Group Belge (Baron Empain), such as Heliopolis Company and Bank Belge. In 1952, Hassan and Hussein El Ibrachy and Said Dermarkar entered into a partnership agreement with Mr. Chalom, forming Chalom, Ibrachy & Dermarkar law firm. Charles Chalom relocated to France, and upon his death in 1956, the firm's name was changed to Ibrachy & Dermarkar. Between 1961 and 1973, I&D worked on the liquidation of assets of its clients as business in Egypt became restricted and major businesses were nationalized. In 1973, President Sadat opened up the economy for international investors, and new laws and regulations were issued to allow a new business-friendly Egypt. In 1985, Bahieldin Elibrachy joined I&D. The firm experienced the decease of the late Dr. Hassan Elibrachy, and Counsellor Moustafa Kamel joined the firm in 1993. In 1994, the late Mr. Said Dermarkar and the late Mahmoud Mokhtar Beriry passed away, and Ahmed Said was promoted to the title of partner in 2008. Mona Osama was promoted to partner in 2019, and Dr. Amir Nabil joined as a partner in 2020. In 2023, Dr. Sherif El Atfy joined as a partner, and Mohamed Ibrahim was promoted to partner in 2025. Throughout its more than ninety years of history, I&D has developed core values and is now led by its fourth-generation leadership. The firm has advised on numerous landmark transactions in Egypt, including the first management buyout in Egyptian history in the food industry, the acquisition of a controlling interest in an Egyptian ceramic company (one of the largest transactions on the stock exchange), and the full acquisition of the largest cement manufacturer in Egypt by a major European player. It also has extensive experience in the airline business, having represented founding members of major airline alliances before their formation. The firm continues to expand regionally and aims to lead the market in various legal services.
