Overview
Ice Marine is a United Kingdom-based boat builder specialising in the design, prototyping and manufacture of high-speed offshore powercraft. The company was established in 1995 by Jeremy Watts, an offshore racer who had just won the 2 litre World Championship, together with a team of respected offshore racing professionals including naval architect Lorne Campbell. From its earliest days the venture set out to improve the performance, efficiency, handling and safety of high-speed powerboats, developing a new hull form that became the Bladerunner. Initially focused on the leisure market with the Bladerunner Series, Ice Marine has since diversified into the commercial patrol and military sectors. The company offers design, prototyping and manufacture of boats ranging from approximately 5 metres to 25 metres in length. Its stated pillars include creativity and a 'can do' attitude, specialist expertise, unique products, quality construction, reduction of waste and environmental impact, and commitment and value. Ice Marine's heritage is closely tied to offshore racing. The first Bladerunner launched and raced in 1998; the RS6 ICE Raceboat (Blade 001) won the Cowes Classic Round the Island Race twice in succession and set a National 6 litre speed record of 101.7 mph. The company's design lineage also includes earlier Lorne Campbell designs such as Skean Dhu, SGL Jet and Mac Tools, which achieved national and world offshore records. Today Ice Marine positions itself as a specialist marine craft business delivering practical, optimised solutions for challenging objectives, with a focus on quality, reliability and reduced environmental impact over a craft's lifespan. It operates primarily from the United Kingdom and serves international markets across performance leisure, commercial patrol and military applications.
History
Ice Marine was established in 1995 by Jeremy Watts, an offshore racer driven by a passion for high-speed craft and a desire to improve the breed. That same year, Watts teamed with successful naval architect Lorne Campbell and a group of respected offshore racing professionals in design, engineering and construction. Their mission was to create the ultimate offshore power craft. At the start of the partnership, Watts was fresh from his 1995 2 litre World Championship win, while Campbell was already a highly successful performance powercraft designer credited with 100 race wins and 20 World and National championships. Together they set out to develop a new hull form focused on improving efficiency, handling and safety of race boats and high-speed leisure craft. This effort produced the Bladerunner. The team soon established itself, and the first Bladerunner launched and raced in 1998. The RS6 ICE Raceboat (Blade 001) was an immediate hit on the demanding 6 litre circuit, winning the Cowes Classic Round the Island Race twice in succession and going on to secure the National 6 litre speed record of 101.7 mph. The company's design heritage also draws on earlier Lorne Campbell designs. Between 1975 and 1980, 'Skean DHU' was designed and developed by Campbell; it won the 1976 National 4 litre championship, set a Class 2 World offshore record in 1979 and an Outright World offshore record in 1980. In 1985, 'SGL Jet' was designed by Campbell and further improved in 1989 with the SGL Jet 2; both craft competed successfully in the British Offshore Racing series. In 1992, 'Mac Tools' was another Lorne Campbell design. Initially focusing on the leisure market with the Bladerunner Series, Ice Marine has since grown and diversified to include the commercial and military sectors. The company now offers design, prototyping and manufacture of boats ranging from 5m to 25m. Its stated pillars include creativity and a 'can do' attitude, specialist expertise, unique products, quality construction, reducing waste and environmental impact, and commitment and value. The company describes its first response as listening, then using creative free thinking alongside sound engineering principles to find practical, optimised solutions to challenging and unique objectives, delivered by a dedicated and passionate team of marine craft professionals.
