Overview

Ichishin Holdings Co., Ltd. is a Japanese holding company that oversees the Ichishin Group, a private education business best known for its cram schools (juku) and preparatory schools under the names Ichishin Gakuin and Ichishin Preparatory School. The group traces its origins to 1965, when Takeo Umeda founded the individually operated Mamma Shingakkai; the business was renamed Ichikawa Shingaku Kyoshitsu in 1970 and incorporated in 1975. A separate company, Ichishin Education Center, was established in 1979 to open Ichishin Preparatory School, and in 1981 it absorbed Ichikawa Shingaku Kyoshitsu. The company changed its name to Ichishin in 1984 and renamed Ichikawa Shingaku Kyoshitsu as Ichishin Gakuin. The company listed its shares over the counter in 1996, the market that later became the Tokyo Stock Exchange Standard Market, where it trades under securities code 4645. In 2010 it moved to a holding-company structure through an absorption-type company split, with the former Ichishin becoming Ichishin Holdings and a subsidiary becoming the new Ichishin. The group has expanded into related education services, including individualized instruction through Kokugakusha, and into nursing-care and welfare services, while also operating corporate functions such as textbook printing and distribution through its subsidiary Yushin (later absorbed in 2014). Ichishin Holdings has been tied to Gakken Holdings since a capital and business alliance in 2011. Gakken increased its stake in stages—to 18.43% in 2014, 31.47% in 2017, and 37.66% in 2019—and in July 2023, with five of nine directors concurrently serving at Gakken group companies, Ichishin Holdings became a consolidated subsidiary of Gakken Holdings. The group's schools serve students across Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Ibaraki, Shizuoka, and Nagano. Its stated mission is to provide lifelong learning opportunities and contribute to a society full of smiles. As of the company profile dated May 28, 2026, Ichishin Holdings is headquartered in Ichikawa, Chiba, with a Tokyo office in Bunkyo, and reported 924 employees plus 3,355 temporary employees on a consolidated basis as of February 28, 2026.

History

The Ichishin group began in May 1965 when Takeo Umeda founded the individually operated Mamma Shingakkai. In December 1970 the school relocated and was renamed Ichikawa Shingaku Kyoshitsu. In June 1975 the business was incorporated as Ichikawa Shingaku Kyoshitsu Co., Ltd. In February 1979, Ichishin Education Center Co., Ltd. was established and opened Ichishin Preparatory School. In May 1999 it established Kokugakusha Co., Ltd., a subsidiary for individualized instruction. On April 16, 2009, in preparation for a holding-company structure, the company established three subsidiaries: Ichishin Preparation Company, Ichishin Wingnet (now Wingnet), and Ichishin Research Institute. In July 2023, with five of nine directors concurrently serving at Gakken Holdings group companies, Ichishin Holdings became a consolidated subsidiary of Gakken Holdings. In September 2018, Ichishin Holdings and Gakken Holdings launched the Education Alliance Network, a joint participation organization for private educational institutions such as cram schools and preparatory schools. As of October 2018, in addition to the two companies, three other companies had joined: Shingakukai, Wizas, and the K-Cin Group (Keishinkan and Meishujuku). The group's subsidiaries include Ichishin Co., Ltd. (100.0%), known for Ichishin Gakuin and Ichishin Preparatory School, and Ibaraki-shin Holdings Co., Ltd. (100.0%), an intermediate holding company managing the Ibaraki-shin Group. The group also operates nursing-care and welfare services and corporate functions.
