Overview

Ici Même Editions is a French independent publishing house dedicated to graphic novels (romans graphiques) and bande dessinée. It was founded in Nantes in 2013 by Bérengère Orieux, who had previously worked at Tartamudo éditions and spent ten years at Vertige Graphic before establishing her own imprint. The publisher built a small but distinctive catalogue focused on translated works, with roughly 90% of its authors coming from outside France. By the end of 2019 the company had published 45 works, averaging about seven titles per year. The house gained critical recognition through several award-winning books. Giacomo Nanni's Acte de Dieu (2019) was selected for the Angoulême International Comics Festival and received the Prix de l'audace in January 2020. Barbara Baldi's Ada (2019) won the Grand prix Artémisia in 2020, while Nina Bunjevac's Bezimena (2018) received the Prix Artémisia du dessin in 2019 and was also selected for Angoulême. These accolades positioned Ici Même as a curator of international graphic storytelling rather than a mass-market publisher. Despite its critical success, the company faced financial difficulties and was placed in judicial liquidation on 15 January 2025, ending its activity. The publisher's legacy rests on a concise catalogue of literary comics that introduced several foreign authors to French readers.

History

Ici Même Editions was founded in Nantes in 2013 by Bérengère Orieux. Before launching her own house, Orieux worked at Tartamudo éditions and then spent ten years at Vertige Graphic, gaining experience in the French comics publishing industry. She established Ici Même to publish graphic novels, with a particular focus on foreign authors. The publisher developed a small, carefully curated catalogue. By the end of 2019, it comprised 45 works, with about 90% of its authors coming from abroad, representing an average output of seven titles per year. This international orientation distinguished it within the French independent comics scene. Critical recognition followed. In 2019, Giacomo Nanni's Acte de Dieu was selected for the Angoulême International Comics Festival and went on to win the Prix de l'audace in January 2020. Barbara Baldi's Ada won the Grand prix Artémisia in 2020, and Nina Bunjevac's Bezimena received the Prix Artémisia du dessin in 2019 and was also selected for Angoulême. These awards highlighted the house's ability to identify and promote distinctive international graphic works. Despite these successes, the company encountered financial difficulties. On 15 January 2025, Ici Même Editions was placed in judicial liquidation, bringing its publishing activity to an end. Its catalogue remains as a testament to its editorial vision.
