Overview
iesy is a German technology brand associated with embedded computing. Under the name iesy GmbH, the company describes itself as a medium-sized manufacturer and development partner for advanced embedded computing solutions, designing and producing intelligent embedded systems for mission-critical applications. Its technologies are deployed in safety-relevant environments such as military platforms, railway infrastructure control and secure industrial systems. The company positions itself around the idea of digital sovereignty, arguing that technological independence requires specialised embedded systems, proprietary security-critical hardware architectures and encrypted communication systems that do not rely on external providers. iesy GmbH organises its offering around three main markets. In Digital Defense it develops and manufactures embedded computers for mission-critical defence applications, with real-time capability, support for air-gapped networks, high-standard encryption, and reliable operation under vibration, heat and moisture. In Critical Infrastructure it supplies embedded systems for high-availability, high-security environments, protecting networks through integrated security mechanisms, physical intrusion detection and secure data transmission, with modular designs for flexible integration and long-term resilience. In Industrial Computing it develops tailored embedded systems that enable precise control of complex processes and safe interaction between humans, machines and robotics, including compact devices for stable data acquisition and panel PCs with touchscreens for intuitive operation under demanding conditions. Technologically, iesy works across computer hardware foundations of modern embedded architectures. This includes Computer-on-Modules (COM) based on established form factors, processor architectures chosen for reliability, integration capability and long-term availability, and storage media selected for performance, lifetime and data security in harsh environments. The company states that it is an active member of the Standardization Group for Embedded Technologies (SGeT), contributing its know-how to the further development of proven standards. Its engineering approach combines embedded computing, high-speed design and security-by-design. The iesy brand has a dual history in Germany. The current embedded-computing company traces its own development back to 1966 and describes a transition from 'ies' to 'iesy' as a decisive moment in its evolution, alongside expansion of its facilities. Separately, the name iesy was used from 1999 to 2007 by iesy Hessen GmbH & Co. KG, a regional cable-network operator in Hesse headquartered in Darmstadt. That business emerged from the regulatory spin-off of Deutsche Telekom's Hessian cable network, started as Hessen Kabel GmbH, used the brand name eKabel in 2000, and was later renamed Iesy. It offered analogue and digital cable television, telephone connections and high-speed internet access, and from November 2005 belonged to Unity Media together with ish. On 22 May 2007 the regional cable operators iesy, ish and Tele Columbus West were merged into the new Unity Media brand. The legal successor of the Kommanditgesellschaft remained Unitymedia Hessen GmbH & Co. KG, later part of Vodafone Deutschland as Vodafone Hessen GmbH & Co. KG. Because of the shared name, the Meinerzhagen system house is sometimes mistakenly regarded as the legal successor of the cable operator; it has taken over the trademark rights and international domains, but the cable company's legal successor is the Vodafone entity. Today the iesy brand is primarily known through iesy GmbH and its embedded-computing activities, with the official website at iesy.com presenting markets, technologies and company news. The company emphasises reliable, secure systems 'Made in Germany' and a partnership-driven, custom-development approach for clients whose requirements exceed standard solutions.
History
The iesy name is connected to two distinct German technology businesses. The first is the current embedded-computing company iesy GmbH, which traces its own development back to 1966 and describes a transition from 'ies' to 'iesy' as a decisive moment in its evolution, together with the expansion of its facilities. This company presents itself as a medium-sized partner for advanced embedded computing, designing and manufacturing intelligent embedded systems for mission-critical applications in military platforms, railway infrastructure control and secure industrial systems. It emphasises proprietary security-critical hardware architectures and encrypted communication systems as a route to digital sovereignty without reliance on external providers. The second and historically separate business is iesy Hessen GmbH & Co. KG, a regional cable-network operator in Hesse that existed from 1999 to 2007 and was headquartered in Darmstadt. It arose in 1999 from the regulatory spin-off of Deutsche Telekom's Hessian cable network. It initially started under the name Hessen Kabel GmbH, used the brand name eKabel in 2000, and was later renamed Iesy. Most of its employees came from Deutsche Telekom. Its first investor was Klesch & Company Ltd. of London, which acquired 65 percent of Hessen Kabel GmbH as of 1 July 2000 for a price of two billion Deutsche Mark. This made it, after the cable network in North Rhine-Westphalia, the second successful sale of a cable network. At that time 1.3 million customers in Hesse were supplied with cable television. The company offered analogue and digital cable television, telephone connections and high-speed internet access. The broadband networks had originally been built by Deutsche Telekom. From November 2005 iesy belonged to Unity Media together with ish. From spring 2006 all Tele Columbus customers in Hesse were to become iesy customers automatically; the products of ish and iesy were aligned but marketed under separate names. On 22 May 2007 the regional cable-network operators iesy, ish (North Rhine-Westphalia) — both network level 3 — and Tele Columbus West GmbH (network level 4 cable-TV provider) were merged into the new brand Unity Media. Besides classic analogue and digital television offerings, the company also offered return-channel-capable high-speed internet access and telephone connections in some expansion areas. The shared name with a system house in Meinerzhagen has led to that system house sometimes being mistaken for the legal successor of the cable operator. The system house has taken over the trademark rights and the international domains, but the legal successor of the Kommanditgesellschaft remains Unitymedia Hessen GmbH & Co. KG, which in the meantime belongs to Vodafone Deutschland as Vodafone Hessen GmbH & Co. KG. The current iesy GmbH continues to operate in embedded computing, presenting markets in Digital Defense, Critical Infrastructure and Industrial Computing, and describing itself as an active member of the Standardization Group for Embedded Technologies (SGeT).
