Overview

IFA Group is a German automotive-components manufacturer whose principal business is the development, production and sale of cardan shafts, side shafts and related driveline components. Its holding company, IFA Holding GmbH, is based in Haldensleben, Saxony-Anhalt, and coordinates a group of operating companies serving vehicle manufacturers and other industrial customers. The group is principally associated with longitudinal shafts, also called propeller or cardan shafts, which transmit torque through a vehicle driveline. Since 2017, it has also produced side shafts for vehicle axle and drivetrain applications. The business originated in 1959 as VEB IFA-Gelenkwellenwerk Haldensleben, commonly known as IFA-Gelenkwelle. During the period of the German Democratic Republic, the plant supplied the East German vehicle and mechanical-engineering industries. It was connected to the VEB IFA-Kombinat Nutzfahrzeuge Ludwigsfelde and, ultimately, to the wider Industrieverband Fahrzeugbau organization. Its products included components for passenger vehicles, agricultural machinery and commercial vehicles, including axle-drive parts for the IFA W50 truck. The plant also supplied selected West German industrial customers before German reunification. After reunification, the operation was converted into a GmbH and administered through Germany's Treuhandanstalt privatization process. Heinrich von Nathusius acquired the company in 1992. The customer base subsequently broadened from its historical East German and industrial relationships to include major international vehicle manufacturers, among them Volkswagen, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Audi and Porsche. IFA expanded its manufacturing footprint with a second cardan-shaft plant in Gardelegen in 2002 and formed a strategic alliance with Japanese bearing and driveline company NTN in 2006. A major expansion step came in 2009, when IFA acquired a majority interest in Tognum's propeller-shaft business, Rotorion. The transaction brought the Charleston, South Carolina, operation into the group and gave IFA a stronger international platform. IFA later established production in Shanghai in 2014. In 2016, the company acquired Daimler's side-shaft production activities, supporting its move beyond longitudinal shafts. A side-shaft plant in Poland began operating in 2017. The expansion placed pressure on the company. In 2018, the von Nathusius family began seeking a buyer. The group entered a restructuring period in 2019 after banks transferred the family's shares to restructuring trustee Arndt Geiwitz. Reported causes included ambitious growth plans, difficulties starting the Polish facility and operational problems associated with expanded production capacity. A restructuring manager was appointed during the same period. AEQUITA, a Munich-based investment company, acquired the IFA Group around the end of 2021 and beginning of 2022. Under the new ownership, the group pursued cost reductions, process changes and production improvements. New customer orders helped it return to profitability in 2023. At the end of 2022, the group comprised eight companies and operated sites in Germany, Poland, the United States and China; its Austrian subsidiary was liquidated in 2023. At the end of 2023, the group employed approximately 2,300 people and was described as the largest automotive supplier in Saxony-Anhalt. Its present positioning is that of a specialized, internationally operating driveline supplier serving global vehicle manufacturers.

History

IFA Group traces its origins to VEB IFA-Gelenkwellenwerk Haldensleben, established in 1959 in the German Democratic Republic. The plant was part of the state-controlled IFA commercial-vehicle and automotive-industrial network. It produced driveline and other mechanical components for cars, agricultural machinery and commercial vehicles, including parts used in the axle drive of the IFA W50 truck. Despite operating within the East German industrial system, it also maintained business relationships with selected West German customers such as Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz and Fendt. Following German reunification, the plant was converted into a limited-liability company and handled through the Treuhandanstalt privatization process. Heinrich von Nathusius acquired the company in 1992. The post-reunification strategy emphasized integration into the international automotive supply chain. Volkswagen became a customer, followed by additional manufacturers including BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Audi and Porsche. IFA increased its manufacturing capacity by opening a cardan-shaft plant in Gardelegen in 2002. The company pursued international and technological expansion during the 2000s and 2010s. In 2006 it entered a strategic alliance with Japan's NTN. In 2009, IFA acquired a majority stake in Rotorion, the propeller-shaft division associated with Tognum. Tognum retained a minority interest at the time, while the transaction brought Rotorion's Charleston, South Carolina, facility into the IFA network. IFA opened a production facility in Shanghai in 2014, extending its reach into the Chinese automotive market. In 2016, IFA acquired Daimler's side-shaft production business. The move broadened its portfolio beyond its established longitudinal-shaft specialization. A new side-shaft plant in Poland opened in 2017. The enlarged footprint and ambitious growth program subsequently produced operational and financial strain. Difficulties at the Polish start-up, together with challenges connected with expanding existing facilities, contributed to a broader crisis. In 2018, the von Nathusius family sought a buyer. In 2019, the family's shares were transferred by the banks to restructuring trustee Arndt Geiwitz, and a restructuring manager was appointed. AEQUITA acquired the group around the end of 2021 and beginning of 2022. The subsequent turnaround program concentrated on cost reductions, manufacturing and process changes, and securing substantial customer orders. The group reported a return to profitability in 2023. At the end of 2022, it comprised eight companies with sites in Germany, Poland, the United States and China. Its Austrian subsidiary was liquidated in 2023. By the end of 2023, the group employed approximately 2,300 people, making it the largest automotive supplier in Saxony-Anhalt. IFA Group now operates as an international driveline-component supplier with its holding company in Haldensleben and manufacturing or commercial locations in Haldensleben, Hanau, Ujazd, Katowice, Charleston, Novi and Shanghai.

    Longitudinal shafts

Longitudinal shafts, also known as cardan or propeller shafts, transmit torque along a vehicle's driveline. They are IFA Group's historical core product and are supplied for passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and other automotive applications. The group has produced these components since its original operation in Haldensleben and expanded capacity through its Gardelegen plant and the Rotorion business.

    Side shafts

Side shafts are drivetrain components used to transfer power from a differential or axle assembly to a vehicle's driven wheels. IFA Group entered this product area through the acquisition of Daimler's side-shaft production activities in 2016. Series production at a Polish facility began in 2017, making side shafts a major complement to the group's established longitudinal-shaft business.
