Overview
IHI Charging Systems International (ICSI) is a European turbocharger manufacturer and a subsidiary of the Japanese heavy-industry group IHI Corporation. The company develops, produces and sells turbocharging systems for internal combustion engines, with a focus on helping automakers meet increasingly strict fuel-consumption and emissions regulations through engine downsizing. Its product range includes wastegate (WG) and variable-geometry (VGS) turbochargers, marketed under model designations such as ICSI RHF3, RHF4, RHF5, RHF55 and RHV4. According to the company, its systems are used millions of times and are fitted by almost all European car manufacturers, with named customers including Stellantis Group, Ferrari, Volkswagen Group, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. The company states that its charging concepts can reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions by around 20 percent. The business traces its origins to 1995, when the first production site was established as IHI Turbo Italy S.p.A. in Italy. Since 2001 that Italian entity has been wholly owned by IHI Charging Systems International GmbH. A second production plant was opened in Ichtershausen, Thuringia, Germany, on 22 April 2009. In 2019 the company moved its management, project management and sales functions to Ichtershausen, and in April 2024 it announced the closure of its two German plants. Research and development for the Independent Aftermarket EMEA is located in Heidelberg, while the Italian production and corporate locations are in Cernusco Lombardone and Verderio in the province of Lecco. ICSI operates as part of the global IHI Group, cooperating with IHI's European locations to serve the worldwide market. The company emphasizes innovation, quality and sustainability in its corporate philosophy, and in June 2024 it obtained TISAX information-security assessment results through TÜV SÜD, reflecting its role as a supplier into the German automotive industry. Its principal corporate website is ihi-csi.it, with a German-domain presence at ihi-csi.de.
History
IHI Charging Systems International (ICSI) is the European turbocharger business of IHI Corporation, a Japanese heavy-industry group. Its history in Europe begins in 1995, when the first production site was founded in Italy as IHI Turbo Italy S.p.A. That Italian entity became wholly owned by IHI Charging Systems International GmbH in 2001, anchoring the group's European turbocharger manufacturing in the Lecco area of northern Italy. A second production plant was opened in Ichtershausen, Thuringia, Germany, on 22 April 2009, expanding the company's manufacturing footprint into Germany. On 28 February 2019, the company announced the relocation of its management, project management and sales functions to Ichtershausen, and in July 2019 the registered office of IHI Charging Systems International GmbH moved to Ichtershausen.
