Overview

IHI Inspection & Instrumentation Co., Ltd. (IIC) is a Japanese engineering services company headquartered in Yokohama, Kanagawa, and a member of the IHI Group. It was established in April 1974 when Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (now IHI Corporation) spun off its inspection service operations as Ishikawajima Inspection Service Co., Ltd. A sister company, Ishikawajima Measurement Service Co., Ltd., was separated from IHI's Technical Research Institute in April 1977; the two merged in April 1982 to form Ishikawajima Inspection & Instrumentation Co., Ltd. The company adopted its current name, IHI Inspection & Instrumentation Co., Ltd., in July 2008. IIC's business centers on inspection, measurement and system technologies that support product development and contribute to social safety and security. Its service portfolio includes non-destructive inspection (PT, MT, ET, UT and RT), measurement services for strain, stress and vibration in structures, testing and analysis services compliant with standards such as JIS and ASME, CAE numerical analysis, and the design and manufacture of custom inspection equipment and systems. It also sells imported inspection and measurement instruments and materials, and provides consulting and equipment sales services. The company serves sectors including social infrastructure and energy, automotive and industrial machinery, aerospace, environment and carbon solutions, and security. Its product lineup includes X-ray inspection systems for airport and facility security and for beverage container inspection, mechatronics products such as automated inspection equipment, the remote-control device Robo QS and the laser cleaning system Laser Clear, automotive environmental test equipment including VT-SHED systems, fuel supply devices and canister loading devices, monitoring systems, and special gas supply equipment. Through its subsidiary Takashima Giken Co., Ltd. (TGK), acquired in 2003, it offers X-ray inspection equipment such as the IXI series for baggage and cargo screening. IIC operates several domestic offices, including the Isogo, Aioi, Kure, Aichi, Fukuura and Toyoda offices, and has overseas operations through IHI Southwest Technologies, Inc. (ISWT) in San Antonio, Texas, established in 1999. The company publishes a technical journal twice a year and runs web seminars in specialized fields. It remains a wholly owned subsidiary within the IHI Group, contributing inspection and measurement expertise to IHI's broader engineering and manufacturing activities.

History

IHI Inspection & Instrumentation Co., Ltd. (IIC) traces its origins to the inspection and measurement operations of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (IHI). In April 1974, Ishikawajima Inspection Service Co., Ltd. was established as a spin-off from IHI, with its original base at what is now the Isogo Office. The company expanded its domestic network over the following years: an Aioi branch office was opened in April 1976 (now the Aioi Office), a Kure branch office in April 1977 (now the Kure Office), and the head office was relocated to Oi, Shinagawa, Tokyo, in December 1977. In May 1979, the Aioi Office was formally established, and in December 1979, an Aichi Office was opened within IHI's Aichi Plant (now the Aichi Office). A parallel entity, Ishikawajima Measurement Service Co., Ltd., was separated from IHI's Technical Research Institute in April 1977. In April 1982, Ishikawajima Inspection Service and Ishikawajima Measurement Service merged to form Ishikawajima Inspection & Instrumentation Co., Ltd. The new company continued to expand, opening the Yokohama Second Office (now part of the Fukuura Office) in March 1983. In July 1991, its capital was doubled to 220 million yen. The Kasumigaura Office was opened in January 1993. In April 1998, the company took over the electronics equipment business—centered on the design, manufacture and maintenance of semiconductor and liquid crystal equipment—from IHI, establishing an Electronics Equipment Division. In April 1999, it celebrated its 25th anniversary and, jointly with IHI's Energy Business Headquarters, established IHI Southwest Technologies, Inc. (ISWT) in San Antonio, Texas, USA. In October 2000, the Yokohama Second Office was significantly expanded to consolidate the main operations of the Measurement and Inspection divisions, becoming the Kanazawa Office (now part of the Fukuura Office). In April 2001, research support operations were separated from IHI's Technical Development Headquarters to create a Research and Development Division. In April 2002, the electronics equipment business was transferred back to IHI, along with the Tsuchiura Office. In August 2003, the company acquired all shares of Takashima Giken Co., Ltd. (TGK), making it a wholly owned subsidiary. In April 2004, the Aichi Office was transferred to the West Japan Division. In July 2004, production rationalization equipment manufacturing and ultra-precision/high-precision machining operations were transferred from IHI's Technical Development Headquarters and integrated into the Research and Development Division. In July 2008, the company changed its name from Ishikawajima Inspection & Instrumentation Co., Ltd. to IHI Inspection & Instrumentation Co., Ltd. In May 2009, the Kasumigaura Office was closed. In July 2009, the Equipment Division and the main operations of the Measurement and Inspection divisions were consolidated into the newly opened Fukuura Office, and the Kanazawa Office was integrated into it. In February 2010, the large X-ray inspection equipment business was transferred from IHI Corporation. In March 2010, the company received a business transfer from JAPUS Co., Ltd., establishing the JAPUS Office and opening the Toyoda Office. In April 2012, part of the Research and Development Division's functions were transferred to IHI Corporation, and the division was reorganized into the Test Project Department; part of the West Japan Division's functions were also transferred to IHI, and the division was reorganized into the Inspection and Measurement divisions. In April 2013, the Test Project Department's operations were transferred to the Measurement Division and Equipment Division. In August 2013, the head office (Oi-machi) was relocated: the Business Audit Department, Quality Assurance Department and Administration Office moved to Fukuura, Kanazawa-ku, Yokohama; the Sales Coordination Department moved to Minami-Oi, Shinagawa (Omori); and the First Inspection Department of the Inspection Division moved to Shinnakarahara-cho, Isogo-ku, Yokohama. In October 2013, the control system business was acquired from IHI S-Cube Co., Ltd. (IS3), and IS3's Tachikawa Office was established as IIC's Tachikawa Office and Control System Division. In December 2022, the Tachikawa Office (Control System Division) was relocated to the Isogo Office. Today, IIC continues to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary within the IHI Group, providing inspection, measurement, testing and analysis services and developing specialized equipment and systems for industries ranging from energy and infrastructure to automotive, aerospace and security.
