Overview

IKA-Werke is a German company specialising in laboratory technology, analytical technology and process technology. It was founded in 1910 in Cologne as Janke & Kunkel OHG, a trading company for pharmaceutical supplies. From 1920 the company began developing and manufacturing its own laboratory and measuring instruments, electrolysis equipment and other apparatus for university and industrial laboratories. After being completely destroyed in a bombing raid in 1942, the company relocated to Staufen im Breisgau, where its headquarters remain today. In 1948 the product and brand name Janke & Kunkel was replaced by IKA, which was considered easier to use in non-German-speaking markets. In 1955 IKA expanded its product range to include industrial machines for dispersing and kneading, responding to the post-war demand for industrial machinery. The first foreign subsidiary was established in the United States in 1985. The company is structured into three business areas: laboratory technology, analytical technology and process technology. Its manufacturing sites are the main plant in Staufen im Breisgau and facilities in Wilmington (North Carolina, USA), Guangzhou (China) and Bengaluru (India). It also maintains sales offices in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Osaka (Japan), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Seoul (South Korea), Oxford (United Kingdom) and Warsaw (Poland). The managing director is the shareholder René Stiegelmann. In 2012 revenue exceeded 100 million euros for the first time. IKA is a privately held company and remains active in its core markets.

History

The company that is today known as IKA-Werke was founded in 1910 in Cologne as Janke & Kunkel OHG, a trading company for pharmaceutical supplies. From 1920 onwards, the company began to develop and manufacture its own laboratory and measuring instruments, electrolysis equipment and other apparatus for university and industrial laboratories. In 1942, the company was completely destroyed in a bombing raid and found a new location in Staufen im Breisgau; some of its employees also moved to Staufen. After the war, foreign trade relations intensified. The management considered the product and brand name Janke & Kunkel too cumbersome for non-German-speaking markets, and so it was replaced by IKA in 1948. The economic growth and reconstruction of the post-war years increased the demand for industrial machines. IKA responded in 1955 by expanding its existing product range to include industrial machines for dispersing and kneading. The first foreign subsidiary was founded in the United States in 1985. After a further increase in revenue in 2008, the company was hit by the global economic crisis in early 2009. Due to the sharp decline in revenue and the expected loss, the company announced job cuts. Despite a strike by some employees, the management refused negotiations. In 2012, revenue exceeded 100 million euros for the first time. In the same year, IKA presented more than 50 new and further developments at the leading ACHEMA trade fair, including two world firsts. The company's business activities are divided into the areas of laboratory technology, analytical technology and process technology. The managing director is the shareholder René Stiegelmann. Manufacturing plants are the main site in Staufen im Breisgau and the branches in Wilmington (North Carolina, USA), Guangzhou (China) and Bengaluru (India). In addition, the company has sales offices in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Osaka (Japan), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Seoul (South Korea), Oxford (UK) and Warsaw (Poland).
