Overview

Ikelite is a U.S. manufacturer in the underwater photographic industry, based in Indianapolis. The company describes itself as family owned and woman-led, and states that it has worldwide name recognition with global distribution in over 95 countries. Its products are used by amateur and professional photographers in wet environments ranging from swimming pools to polar ice caps. Ikelite designs and builds camera housings and underwater lighting products, and its current product line includes underwater housings for mirrorless and compact camera systems as well as underwater strobes.

History

Ikelite traces its origins to 1959, when Ike, who owned a dive shop and dove the Great Lakes on weekends, grew tired of returning home with a trunk full of flooded flashlights and decided there was a better way to create a waterproof seal. In 1962, after traveling the Midwest showing his light at local dive shows, the light was picked up by Dacor; people kept calling and asking about "Ike's lights," and the moniker "Ikelite" was born. The Ikelite was the first underwater dive light with a sealed beam bulb. In 1965, Ikelite moved into housings, aiming to democratize underwater photography; the first offering was a kit with two un-mounted controls for customer adaptation to Kodak Instamatics and other cameras, and Ikelite was the original seamless housing mold and the first to use lid snap closures. By 1979, Ikelite had supported everything from flash cubes to surface flashes inside housings, and its Substrobe 150 flash was introduced. The company states it was originally born in the back of a dive shop, where Ike molded the first Ikelite in a Westinghouse oven. Today Ikelite describes itself as a leading manufacturer in the underwater photographic industry with worldwide name recognition and global distribution in over 95 countries.
