Overview

Il Carabiniere is the institutional monthly magazine of the Arma dei Carabinieri, Italy's national military police force. First launched in 1872 as Il Carabiniere - Giornale Militare, the publication has appeared under various titles and formats over more than a century, serving as a channel for the force's values, history, and professional information. The original series ran until 1894, and after a series of private and institutional precursors, the magazine was re-established on 1 January 1948 under the direction of the Chief of Staff of the General Command, replacing the earlier official publication Il Carabiniere della Nuova Italia. Since 1975 the magazine has been published by the Ente Editoriale per l'Arma dei Carabinieri, a private-law foundation linked to the institution and established on the initiative of then Chief of Staff Arnaldo Ferrara, whose legal personality was recognized by Presidential Decree No. 1028/1975. The foundation pursues its aims through periodic and non-periodic editorial products, including the famous Calendario storico dell'Arma dei Carabinieri and numerous historical, iconographic, and documentary volumes dedicated to the institution, its units, and related themes. It has its own assets and financial and administrative autonomy, supporting itself through management of its patrimony and profits from the exploitation and sale of its editorial products, without committing public resources. The magazine is distributed by subscription for 11 issues per year. It is a current affairs, culture, and professional information periodical that aims to spread knowledge of the institution, promoting its values, history, and activities through technical, legal, historical, general culture, and current affairs content related to institutional life and activities. Each issue consists of 130 pages divided into thematic areas. Regular columns linked to the Carabinieri world include "Per non dimenticare" (Lest we forget), "Le Medaglie d'Oro" (The Gold Medals), "La Stazione" (The Station), "Cronache dal territorio" (Chronicles from the territory), "Rosso & Blu" (Red & Blue), and "Sport" (Sport). The publication has always enjoyed the collaboration of leading figures in journalism and culture. Among those who have written for it are Indro Montanelli, Mario Cervi, Enzo Biagi, Giorgio Bocca, Arrigo Petacco, Sergio Zavoli, Luciano De Crescenzo, Giobbe Covatta, Piero Ostellino, Roberto Gervaso, Paolo Crepet, Maria Grazia Cucinotta, Melanton, Ferruccio De Bortoli, Philippe Daverio, Klaus Davi, Andrea Margelletti, Licia Colò, Nicola D'Amico, Francesco Sabatini, Rosanna Lambertucci, Valerio Staffelli, Alberto Angela, Alberto Bilà, Antonio Paolucci, Alessandro Barbano, Gian Piero Galeazzi, Marco Patricelli, and Beppe Boni. In terms of special initiatives, from 2007 to 2015 the magazine ran the "Carabinieri in Giallo" competition, which awarded crime stories featuring men and women of the Benemerita. In the first edition the jury presidency was entrusted to Giancarlo De Cataldo. For 2007 the prize went to Ezio Cappa from Foggia, who donated the prize money (3,000 euros) to charity. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with Mondadori, which in July 2008 published, in its Gialli series, the first anthology with the 13 best stories from the 2007 edition. The volume, also called Carabinieri in Giallo, has an introduction by the then editor-in-chief Roberto Riccardi, a preface by Laura Toscano (jury member and author of Il maresciallo Rocca), and conclusions by Giancarlo De Cataldo. Since 2017 the magazine has again offered scholarships dedicated to subscribers and their children who have distinguished themselves in their studies, from lower secondary school to university. In 2017 and 2018 some supplements were published attached to the magazine: "L'impegno internazionale dell'Arma" (July 2017); "Truffe agli anziani. I consigli dell'Arma" (December 2017); "A tutela dei consumatori.

History

The history of Il Carabiniere spans more than a century and reflects the evolution of the Arma dei Carabinieri's official communication. The first publication bearing the name, Il Carabiniere - Giornale Militare, appeared in 1872 and ran until 1894. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, several similar publications were launched as private initiatives, including Il Monitore dei Carabinieri Reali (1873-1924), Carabiniere Italiano (1873-1924), Il giornale del Carabiniere (1926-1933), Il Carabiniere (1925-1937), and Rivista dei Carabinieri Reali (1934-1943). In November 1934, the first periodical published directly by the Arma saw the light: Rivista dei Carabinieri Reali, which ceased publication in 1943. It was followed by Il Carabiniere della Nuova Italia, published until 1947. On 1 January 1948, on the initiative of the General Command, Il Carabiniere was founded, with the Chief of Staff serving as director. This marked the beginning of the modern magazine, which replaced the previous official publication. Since 1975, the magazine has been published by the Ente Editoriale per l'Arma dei Carabinieri, a private-law foundation linked to the institution. It was established on the initiative of then Chief of Staff Arnaldo Ferrara, and its legal personality was recognized by Presidential Decree No. 1028/1975. The foundation pursues its goals through the publication of periodic and non-periodic editorial products, including the famous Calendario storico dell'Arma dei Carabinieri and numerous volumes of historical, iconographic, and documentary content dedicated to the institution or to particular units, themes, and aspects concerning it. The Ente has its own patrimony and financial and administrative autonomy, and supports itself through the management of its assets and profits from the exploitation and sale of its editorial products, without committing public resources. The magazine consists of 130 pages divided into thematic areas. Regular columns linked to the Carabinieri world include "Per non dimenticare", "Le Medaglie d'Oro", "La Stazione", "Cronache dal territorio", "Rosso & Blu", and "Sport". Over the decades, the publication has featured contributions from many prominent journalists and cultural figures, such as Indro Montanelli, Mario Cervi, Enzo Biagi, Giorgio Bocca, Arrigo Petacco, Sergio Zavoli, Luciano De Crescenzo, Giobbe Covatta, Piero Ostellino, Roberto Gervaso, Paolo Crepet, Maria Grazia Cucinotta, Melanton, Ferruccio De Bortoli, Philippe Daverio, Klaus Davi, Andrea Margelletti, Licia Colò, Nicola D'Amico, Francesco Sabatini, Rosanna Lambertucci, Valerio Staffelli, Alberto Angela, Alberto Bilà, Antonio Paolucci, Alessandro Barbano, Gian Piero Galeazzi, Marco Patricelli, and Beppe Boni.
