Overview
The Immler-Großfamilienstiftung is a charitable foundation based in Isny im Allgäu, Germany. It was founded on 24 December 2004 by brothers Karl Friedrich Immler and Jakob Immler, both real estate investors from Isny. The foundation's mission is to support large families with four or more children and at least two seniors (people aged 55 and above, who need not be related to the family) by offering them a house for one euro per month. In return, tenants agree to perform 20 hours of charitable work per month collectively. The foundation aims to counteract social trends such as childlessness and old-age poverty by enabling multi-generational living. As of 2009, the foundation's assets amounted to 13 million euros. It has built five houses in Durach and Schemmerhofen, with the first three occupied since Christmas 2008 and two more handed over in July 2009. The foundation continues to acquire land for future construction, with plans for further residential buildings from 2021. In 2014, it received the Fair Family seal of approval from the Association of Large Families in Germany. The foundation has also faced some criticism regarding land sales at special prices.
History
The Immler-Großfamilienstiftung was founded on 24 December 2004 by brothers Karl Friedrich Immler (born 23 February 1948; died 24 June 2020) and Jakob Immler (born 1950), both German real estate investors from Isny im Allgäu. The foundation was established as a charitable and non-profit organization with the aim of supporting large families. Its model is similar to the Fuggerei in Augsburg: families with four or more children and at least two seniors (people aged 55 and above, who need not be related) are provided with a house for one euro per month. In return, the tenants commit to performing 20 hours of charitable work per month collectively. The foundation's capital is fully owned by the Immler-Großfamilienstiftung. To address the high demand from large families, the foundation, together with the construction company Geiger Unternehmensgruppe from Oberstdorf and Dünkel Investment GbR from Schemmerhofen, built and rented out a total of five houses under an investor model. Three houses are located in Durach near Kempten and have been occupied since Christmas 2008. Two more in Schemmerhofen near Biberach were handed over to tenants in July 2009. As of 2009, the foundation's assets amounted to 13 million euros. In 2012, 4,500 square meters were sold to the foundation in Isny. In November 2016, the Isny municipal council decided to sell approximately 2,500 square meters to the foundation, bringing its total land holdings to 18,500 square meters, on which residential buildings are planned from 2021. On 29 March 2014, the foundation was awarded the Fair Family seal of approval by the Association of Large Families in Germany. The foundation has also faced criticism: a reader's letter to the Schwäbische Zeitung criticized that land in Isny was sold to the foundation at special prices, and noted that as of 2016 only five families met the housing requirements, with the intention to move in unclear. Karl Immler was a member of the Isny municipal council from 2009 to 2012.
